Only displays when powered up with screen at 30 degrees

Are you saying the backlighting isn't working? Or is it the on/off switch the controls the backlighting when the lid is closed or opened? Maybe tis will help: Has it been dropped, jarred, bumped? Fell over? There is a ribbon cable in the rear of the monitor that can be loose.

I have a HP Pavilion dv9720us notebook running Vista. Since I performed a system recovery it will no longer acknowledge the CD/DVD drive. I have tried several times to redo the system recovery but still...

Try following this, XP, Vista, and Windows 7 seem to run into this problem.
It will remove the high and low filters, forceing the machine to regenrate and it somehow finds the drive again.

The screen is scrambled at times. It seemed like

it's probably not the LCD, it is most likely the ribbon cable... it could be repaired or if not, replaced...

Sound card

I was unable to locate appropriate drivers for either of the sound systems on that model from the HP website, but you should be able to get them through the Windows Update site. Just make sure you choose the Custom button (Express only looks for critical updates) and check the drivers section to see what is available for you. I know for sure the RealTek drivers are there and I would assume that the Conexant drivers are as well, so you should be covered no matter which specific hardware configuration you have.

Sounds to me like you are missing the drivers for the soundcard...the drivers are basiclly the software thatallows your computer to communicate with the hardware (in this case the soundcard).

What you can do is download the drivers and install them , which should get you your sound back!

You can download them here:
