Question about Projection Televisions

2 Answers

I have a 50-inch Samsung Plasma(model S5053), purchased in Sept. 06. It has been outstanding in terms of HD quality picture, but recently it has developed a kind of twinkling effect in the background of the picture, almost like snow from bad reception. I have DISH network with excellent reception (two other TVs without the problem). Is this twinkling effect somethin common to Plasma sets and is there a solution?

The effect is multicolored and is across the entire screen

New symptom: Last night I was watching when the screen made a couple of popping noises and the picture got extremely fuzzy. It cleared up a bit after a few seconds and became very clear, then again the popping noise and the fuzzy picture.

Thanks for the comments. I have called for a technician to come out and see what's going on.

If this twinkling affect is mainly blue and predominantly in the corners or to the sides, the power supply voltages need to be adjusted.

Can you see the twinkling with a black screen. There could still be voltage adjustments but also alignments on the Y-main board that does the video biasing.

It soundas like bad connections on the Y-main board or the Y-drive board. These are the boards that introduse the video to the plasma panel. Good luck

This T.V. more than likely has a bad lamp. I don't know the model number so look up on ebay for a lamp replacement by model number after you inspect it and find it to look cloudy or exploded.

I do not think there is an issue with the TV. I do not think that the station themselves broadcast the Closed Captioning.

I think you answered your own question. You have a rear projection television. It sounds like the lamp is not functioning correctly.
All projection lamps have a recommended life measured in hours. I checked the web and this model appears to be about 3 or 4 years old. from 2005 or so.
The lamp in my Samsung is rated at 3000 to 5000 hours, I had 12,800 when the service Tech was in changing another part.
3 or 4 years running one lamp is a good run. This is why DLP has lost favor for table top sets, Most are LCD or Plasma now.
Check you TV for it's lamp model and them shop around allot. Lamps are not cheap however some suppliers offer much better pricing that others. Care should be taken to make sure you order and purchase real replacement lamp and not a clone / compatible model. Original parts should produce the picture you are expecting

Look in your owners manual and contact Samsung and complain about the Repairs. They can't do anything about the promotion deal, but they should check into the repair issue for you. Especially if the Company servicing the TV is an Authorised Samsung Center.

Hope that helps...

This is a fault definately. I have run into this with Samsung plasma tv's and find if you do some electrical adjustments you can usually remedy the situation. Sometimes though, it is the panel going bad or a board. Do u have any pictures i can see? Also keep in mind that if you have a DVM you can make the adjustments yourself. Good luck...GURU JAY

Sony 57 Inch XBR 2001

I don't have the XBR, but on my sony, using the cable box remote, I had to go into menu/display/etc. and mark the 1080i, 720p, and 480i settings. you usually get a "if you can see this" comment if your tv accepts the settings. for standard tv i set the screen to normal, and when the upper channels go to HD, they auto go to full screen. Sounds like you are using the component cable, and also make sure you are on the video port of remote, and the the TV input. The above worked for mine. Hope it helps.
