Gateway PC crashing when connecting to Wi-FI

My Gateway PC (bought in 2005) crashes each time I connect to a wireless connection. The problem began when I installed my home wireless router and now crashes when I try to connect to wifi access in cafes and in offices. I can still connect without problem using a LAN cable.

When I connect to a wifi network (If I am so lucky) I stay online briefly and then my screen goes blue, crashes, and automatically restarts.

What is going on with my laptop? Is it the internal wireless card or is there a problem with my laptop's hard drive? And lastly, can this be repaired without a huge cost? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jonathan

If i was you i would load up a version of win xp on another hard drive inserted into your laptop, load the drivers for the laptop including wi fi drivers then see if ok. if not you can be sure its a faulty wi fi card in your laptop, you need to disable internal wi fi card remove, replace it.but first try borrow a pcmcia wi fi card just to check if everythings ok

Enable / Disable an Enterprise Laptop's Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is networking technology that allows you to connect to the Internet. If you have a wireless-enabled Latitude computer you can connect to the Internet when in range of an access point called a hotspot.
When not in use your Latitude's wireless card should be disabled. By disabling Wi-Fi, you will receive two benefits:
Start-up times will be much faster.
If the wireless card is ON and you are out of the office (not connected to your normal, wired connection), the laptop will try to use the Wi-Fi network during the login process to run the various start-up scripts, etc. It will eventually time-out (fail). By having the wireless card turned OFF, the start-up process will be much faster.
Computer will not continually search for a wireless network (and waste battery life).
If you are in the office (connected to your normal, wired connection) or in a location where there is no wireless hotspot, you don't need to have the computer waste processing power by looking and looking for a wireless hotspot. By disabling Wi-Fi, you will gain a little more power for your other tasks. In addition, you will maximize your battery operating time by disabling wireless activity.
NOTE: After your Latitude has started up completely, you can ENABLE the wireless card and connect to a wireless hotspot. For example, a wireless router at your home or at a local coffee shop. If you have connected to this hotspot previously, the wireless card should connect automatically for you.
NOTE: Once you have the wireless card enabled, before you shut down the computer, you should again DISABLE the card. The computer will then be ready for the next time you turn it on with wireless turned off.
Enable / Disable with Hardware Switch
The more recent Latitude models have a wireless switch to enable or disable wireless network devices and the
Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator.
Dell Latitude E6420 and E6520 Series
These laptops have a small switch on the RIGHT side of the keyboard. The switch is toward the front of the laptop. The Wi-Fi Catcher™ icon will is above the keyboard. You will see a lit radio tower if the wireless switch is enable

Don't know how to connect to my home wifi

Connecting your Acer laptop to your home wireless network is fairly simple.
Before you begin you need to know the SSID broadcast name (Wi-Fi) network name and security passphrase (Wi-Fi network password).

Move the Wi-Fi switch to the "On" position.
Not all models have this switch.

Open the Windows Start menu and select "Connect To."
A list of available connections will appear.

Select "All" from the drop-down menu to view all available networks and connections within range.

Select the desired network and click "Connect."
Enter the security passphrase if prompted and click "Connect" again to join the network and gain wireless Internet access.

I would like my computer to be wireless instead of having to hook it up to the modem every time how do I do this is their software I can buy or download

If u have a late model laptop, it would have come with wi Fi (wireless) switch, most likely in the front this turns your with Fi on and off, if its a late model you can buy a with Fi card for laptops, or a USB wi Fi dongle which allows you to connect to wi Fi , they can be bought at Harvey Norman or eBay ..

I have a windows 8 gateway laptop(NE71B Series) and its seems as if my wifi switch is disable. Anyone with a bit of advice on how to resolve this problem would be very helpful.

Recently had a coworker bring me a Gateway NE71B laptop.
Complaint: No wireless even using a VZW 4GLTE hotspot.
Observations:
; All drivers and devices are functional with no errors or conflicts.
; Wireless adapter has power and is not in Airplane mode.
; No wireless networks are visible even though there are normally as many as 12 networks available within the area.
; Wired Ethernet adapter works without issues.
Solution:
Turns out the BIOS was v2.05. After updating the BIOS to v2.13, wireless connectivity is functional. All locally available wireless networks (SSIDs) are visible.

Notes of caution:
; A failed BIOS update will invalidate your warranty per Gateway chat support rep.
; Ensure you have a fully charged battery before updating the BIOS.
; Ensure your AC adapter is plugged in and functional prior to starting the BIOS updater.

Wi-fi was blue screen crashing, acer tech support had me do stuff now i have no wi-fi at all

You might have some viruses and malware.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking". Now get some or ALL of the FREE programs below.

Download, Install and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

When Installing choose the non-pro version.

Download, Unzip, Install and Run TDSSKiller:

Download, Install and Run Super Anti-Spyware:

If you have an outdated Anti-virus program then Download, Install and Run Avira Anti-Virus:

Make sure to select ALL of the "threat categories" when you install or configure Avira.

You should be in pretty good shape if you run and install all of these programs.

Wi fi is on but still can't connect to the internet

Not only does Wi-Fi have to be on, but it has to be connected to a wireless access point (sometimes called a wireless router), and the wireless access point has to be properly connected to the internet. If the wireless access point/router has empty ports on it, plug your computer into one of those ports, and see if you can connect to ther internet then. If you can, the problem is somewhere between the wireless access point/router and the computer. Could be the transmitter part of the wireless router, could be the wireless network adapter on your computer, or could be the driver that runs the wireless adapter on the computer. If you cannot access the internet when you plug into the wireless ap/router, then you need to go one step "upstream." This would likely be the cable modem or DSL modem. Plug directly into that with your computer, and reboot both the modem and the computer (just unplug the power from the modem and then plug it back in to reboot the modem). If you can connect to the internet then, the problem is the wireless router/ap. If you cannot connect to the internet then, contact your ISP.

Can't connect to wi-fi

Did you try to enable your wi-fi first by pressing the function key + F1 at the same time. Have you seen any wireless connection you can connect, if not you are to signal are too low try playing your laptop location for higher signal. try repairing your wireless connection by clicking troubleshoot problems on wireless signal. Try disabling and enabling your network adapter to device manager.
