Same thing happens to me. Same age, same condition. When I turn camera on it won't extend the lens fully. Sounds like the motor is running but nothing happens. Error message, "lens error, restart camera", is displayed. Camera shuts itself off sometimes. Has fresh batteries. Any ideas what needs to be done to repair? How much?

I have the exact same as above

    Lens error restart problem.

If I take out the batteries or take out the SD, the camera turns off. When the removed items replaced, the camera powers on and the lens retracts.

Next time I start it up, same problem

Seems like Canon has a design / mechanical flaw in a whole lot of cameras.

Any way of fixing this myself or having Canon stand behind their product that are out of warrantee?

So no one has a solution to this yet? I don't know how to "restart camera" other than taking the batteries out and putting them back in again.

It chugs along, but then gives up and displays the same message? Does this mean it's time for a new camera?

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Lens error, restart camera

Try to unstick the lens by gently pushing it in or pulling it out a little bit. IF that fails, the gears are too misaligned to repair it without opening it.

If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that replace them such as camera lens repairs.

If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:
