    Hey Guru Jee,
My thanks for the quick reply. I do not have any tech skills however we did fix the problem - although I don't know why. We were trying to hook up surround sound and my friend had 1 speaker hooked up (just to hear if any sound was coming through.) We checked the wiring and rat-tailed tightly all speaker wires but still when it turned on it wen't right into PROTECT mode. So I had my friend hook up all front and rear speakers and try again. With 4 speakers connected to the system she worked just fine. We watched our first surround sound movie last night and its working good this morning. Perhaps this info. will help others.

    Thank you and thank FixYa,

I cleaned the contacts on the transistors and it's working great now. Previously, I spilled some drink on the unit and it went into protect mode and it was in the power amp section. It's all up and running again. Thanks for the info. --Steve B.

Hello,
STR-D611 goes to Protect mode when Amp Out area has some problem or got some hardware failure / parts damaged.
If you have experience in repair of Amplifiers, then check followings...

  • Transistor Q708 & 758 , collector +42 volt
  • Transistor Q709 & 759 , collector -42 volt
  • Test above 4 transistors with multi meter
You should obtain related service manual from online manual store.
Need further help, let me know.

Question. When the Main display in the STR-D611, goes out and the equipment is no longer producing sound, what could the problem stem from.

if you disconnected everything and it still goes into protect, the most likely there is a damaged amp channel that will need to be repaired.

The receiver will be on for a while 5mins.or so, then it will make this loud sound as it goes into protector mode...what is this and how do I fix this. I have it connected to the TV, DVD Player, CD, VHS...

you have speaker wires that are shorting out. unhook all the wires and ohm them out. Find out which one is shorting. I've had this problem before. It's fine until you turn it up, Then the receiver turns off and goes into protect mode. It's just a short in the wiring,.

When swicth on, it goes out after writing protect, can i do anything?

It goes into protect mode when it senses something wrong. First check the speaker wires for shorts or diconnect them as a test. Turn it on, if still in protect mode, the problem is internal and needs to be looked at by a tech/repair shop.

When iturn on my Sony STR-DE325 it goes into protect mode

Try disconnecting all of your speakers, and then turn on you unit. If you have a defective speaker, or a short in your wires, your unit will go into protect mode. If your unit seems ok with the speakers disconnected, then turn unit off, hook up one of the speaker leads and try it. This way you can isolate the problem.......

Good Luck,

Eric

Sony STR DB-930 Receiver jumping into protector mode

I went through the amp/receiver and used small star washers on all the grounding screws I could find including the one securing the transformer, cleaned dust off all circuit boards, checked output transistors and fuses, all OK.

Re Assembled unit and it worked OK.

I will buy a fan and fan it to avoid sourcing heatsinks for the previusly suggested IC's.

Thanks for the technical help, sure solved my problem.

Regards

Darryl.
