Top element does not come on when I bake..is it supposed to?

Are both the top and bottom element supposed to come on when I bake in the oven

No only the bottom the bake supposed to come on, the top one is for broiling when you set the knob or push for broiling.it will burn the top of everything you put in there.

Shaffy, When baking only the bake element should heat. When broiling only the broil element (upper) should heat. Your oven is a Kitchenaid, you have a 5 year warranty on any electronic element or control board. You may have a temperature sensor that is not working right. The oven just might need to be calibrated, the instructions would be in your owners manual. Your bake element might be failing, it would have to be ohmed out. You also need to verify that the bake element is getting 240V. when turned on. Catriver...post back

Should upper element be on when baking?


Some ovens turn both top and bottom elements on for pre-heat. For baking at temp, only bottom element cycles on and off.

Single element stove oven, doesn't get hot enough


Your oven probably has a feature called a hidden bake element. The element is located beneath the floor of the oven. (Because of this, NEVER put aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven because it will get hot enough to melt the aluminum foil and make it bond to the bottom of your oven.) You can adjust the temperature of your oven through the electronic oven controls. Check your owner's manual for how to do this.

Yes the lower element of a electric oven is the bake element,the upper on is broil element,
The most usual thing why it doesnt heat is a broken element. Does a part of it look smooth and a part real rough and ragged looking
If a part of it looks ragged and rough the element is bad,it should not be bulged out anywhere of it.
it should look smooth and uniform
If it does seem to be not uniform anywhere on it,replace bake element

The bottom oven is heating up very slow.


If you are having problems with your electric oven heating up too slowly, not being able to maintain temperature set point, or wild variations in temperature, then you probably have a bad baking element in your oven.

The bake element is the bottom element in your oven. The life span of these elements can vary depending on the usage of your oven and the quality of the element. Anything electric has an unpredictable lifespan. Elements made on the same assembly line can vary greatly in how long they last. But when the element burns out it will need to be replaced to have your oven work properly.

The thing the fools many people is that many ovens will use the broil element to preheat the oven and then switch to using the baking element only. When this happens the oven will no longer heat and will cool down. The unit may sense this and activate the broil element again which will cause wild swings in temperature and also can cause food to burn on the top self or not bake properly.

If you can see the elements, watch them and see if they both get red hot when initially warming the oven. If only the top, broil element gets hot then you have a burned out element or a bad contacts where the element plugs into. Usually lifting the element and pulling out on it will release the element. If the contacts are discolored or pitted then they could be causing your problems. By using an ohm meter you can check the resistance of the element. If you get no continuity through the element it is no good.Bad elements will often have blisters, bubbles, or even burn in two.

If the element contacts are bad, make sure the you replace both the element and the receptacle that the element plugs into. Replacing only the element will only temporarily solve your problem.

I have a whirlpool range mod rf368lxpq o replaed probe and panel still very slow to come to temp. pre heat goes to about 200 deg and then veryy slow to come up to temp and hold temp


It sounds like one of the elements are not working. There should be a concealed element in the bottom of the oven and a 'bake assist' element at the top iether seperate from the grill element or as a dual element assembly. Both of these elements should heat on bake function (not the grill element though), check for heat from both by turning bake on and feeling for heat from top and bottom. The oven requires heat from bot to get up to and maintain temp.

When you say Top Element, I assume you mean the TOP OVEN ELEMENT, correct? You have bake, and broil? Bake is usually on the bottom, and broil is the top. In order to have the oven operate correctly, the top and bottom elements may come on at start, in order to do as you just said, "Preheat the oven". This will insure an even distribution of the heat in the oven box and result in better cooking expierences. I would not be alarmed or concerned if the top element came on for a short period to pre-heat in preparation for cooking. This is normal. If the top element stayed on, and did not shut off on bake after the pre-heat period, then I would say you have a control board problem. However, if it comes on and then goes out, except when you are broiling, then I would say that this is normal for your stove, and the pre-heat mode of operations. Your owners manual should advise you of this very process in the guide section to how to use the oven. I hope this helps and that all your cakes, pies, souffle's and the like are......delicious. GE JBP30 oven bottom element not working after being replaced


I would be looking at the bake relay on teh coven control board. Using a voltage meter test the output voltage when energizing the bake feature. Be sure to remove the bake element wire coming from the bake element to the control. Test this terminal without the bake element wire attached. From the terminal with one meter probe to the neutral on the terminal block (where your cord attaches to), you should read 110 volts when energized and 0 voltge when shut off. What are you reading? Oven heating on bake


yes both elemnts do initially come on to get unit up to temp ( a bake boost) the lower elemnt then cycles on/off to maintain temp.. that is normal operation

on bake setting only your bake element is on broil element comes on for preheat only naturally the top part of your oven is hotter heat rises take the temp in the center of oven with a good thermometer
those cheap ones are a guide only dont swear by them
