Consider replacing if: Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold No one is home for long periods of the day and you do not have a programmable thermostat Your home has humidity problems Your home has excessive dust Your heating or cooling system is noisy

If you need to replace it, it will be because it is not working well or not adaquately cooling your home. After 10 years motors dry out if you don't service them yearly or bi yearly the bushings will burn out because of being dry and not enough lubrication on the bearings and bushing. Some units are cheaper than others and they go out more quickly. others are more expensive and have been built alot better and will naturally last longer. When bearings and bushings dry out there is more pull of electricity to turn the motors. And eventually they will lockup or burn out. Motors can be replaced with better grades that are more expensive but will last much longer. Newer units these days are very efficient using less electricity and cooling better.
