this means something has halted the boot up process. Make sure there is no CD in the drive, no floppy disk (if it has one) in the drive etc.etc. If all that looks good, the laptop may also be trying to resume from a faulted state... remove the power supply and battery for about an hour, then reinsert the battery, plug the unit in, and try again. If you still only get a blinking cursor, then the operating system on the hard disk is corrupt. You may at that point need to reinstall or repair the operating system.
If it is plugged in, and still running from the battery, you likely have a bad adapter or power jack. If you have a multimeter, set it in a range that would display 16v dc voltage, then stick the red inside the plug from the adapter, and touch the black to the outside of the plug, and see if the voltage registers (most IBM laptops use 16 volt adapters).
That could be a video card driver issue. It seems that when the projector is connected, windows detects it a create another screen using up more memory. Try download a latest video card driver for your laptop http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1rd635ww.exe
this is for Windows 200/XP for the IBM Thinkpad T42. If that doesn't work then you should also try updating your operating system.
Hope that helps!
