Because of high humidity in the air, the evaporator gets cold enough to cause the extra moisture to freeze. This could happen if you are low on refrigerant or if your coils or filters are dirty. If you are low on freon, you most likely have a leak and should hire a professional to fix this. A temporary fix is simply to turn off the unit until it warms up/thaws. Then turn it back on. But this is not a permanent solution. Clean any dirty coils or filters and if this doesn't fix the problem, have a professional check for leaks and refrigerant levels.

How do you clean the dirty coils? I believe they are located in the attic. What solution should be used to clean them? The filter I purchase is one for trapping allegens and this was installed in May.
Also, what this type of cleaning be label a maintenance checkup?
Thanks,

The evaporator (inside coil) icing up can be normal under certain conditions. The problem isn't caused by high humidity -although it won't happen at low humidity conditions-, it can be caused by several factors (or combination of factors)- running your thermostat at the lowest possible setting while the temperature is 70 deg. F or below outside, running the fan speed on low, a dirty filter, a leak, a restriction in the refrigerant circuit, etc. If you are low on refrigerant, you DEFINITELY have a leak. An air conditioner doesn't use refrigerant as a car uses gasoline. It is a sealed system and will never need any refrigerant added unless it leaks out. I would first check your filter, then check and see that your thermostat isn't set on the lowest possible setting. Don't run the a/c when the outside temperature is below 60 degrees unless you don't mind it icing up. Make sure the air outlets in the ceiling aren't shut off and check to see that no one has blocked the return air grill with a piece of furniture. If none of these solutions helps, then call a professional.
