I installed a sata dvd drive in my dc5100 sff the boot order recognises it as an ide drive

i dont think it matter if your system detects it as sata or ide, both interface will work in installing OS, the important thing is you changed your boot order. originally it was supposed to boot in 1st drive whichever it is hard drive or dvd drive. go to bios then follow the instruction in how to move the order of boot sequence, mine is SHIFT key then PLUS.

Compaq Mini 700EL hdd not recognised

If you are installing Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

I formatted my hardrive and when i want to install Windows Xp it starts fine but then tells me that my hardrive is not installed, how can i fix this? "Setup did not find any Hard Disks Installed in...

Windows XP needs the SATA textmode drivers for it to recognise the SATA hard drive. This can be downloaded from this link:
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2391
You will need the SATA AHCI driver

You must then burn the drivers to a CD or copy to a USB stick. When installing windows XP, you will be prompted "press F6" to load additional drivers, at this point the install will ask you to specify where these drivers can be found, if you direct it to the USB or CD Rom (USB is better to avoid disc swapping), it should find the drivers needed and then recognise your hard drive.

The above is a bit academic though, because this does not appear to support Windows XP according to the downloads options on the link

I have 500GB transcend Portabale hard drive but not working, need installation driver or some thing other ?

External hard drives connected to the USB port do not require any additional drivers for WIN XP, Vista or Win 7. If it is not being recognised at all then the USB converter inside the box is faulty. If the PC recognises the USB converter but not the hard drive then the hard drive may be faulty.

Am trying to reistall Win XP. Have run Fdisk and reformatted HDD. PC will not recognise install CD, keeps coming up with errors, does not find CD or HDD. Hav also tried running setup from floppy, again...

IF the hard drive is a SATA hard drive, you will first of all need to download the SATA drivers for te motherboard and copy them to a Floppy drive on another computer if yours will not work, this may also affect why it is not "seeing" the Cd drive if this is a SATA one too

Try installing Windows and when the message " press F6 if you want to ...." appears, have the floppy inserted in teh floppy drive so it can find thr SATA drivers, it will then recognise the Hard drive and install

Computer does not recognise it. Device driver install failed.

There are various possible reasons:
1. You may not be logged in as the administartor in the computer you tried using it it. ---When you are not logged in as the admin, you PC depending on the OS sometimes may not allow you to install any additional hardware.
2. There may be something wrong with either the device or the connecting cable. Try using the device in some other PC. If it does not work, try changing the connecting cable, if that does not work either, change the device. If it however does work with the same cable and device on another machine, then there may be a problem with your PC/OS. You should post this question again giving more info on the device and your PC and OS.

Apollo 320gb external hdd is not recognised by PC . USB is enabled and recognises other devices.

If the drive came with a disk and they usually do I would recommend you install the disk first and after the installation has been carried out you then try to connect your hard drive via your usb port. Good luck. If this doesn't work then there may be incompatibility issues. What version of windows are you using? Andrew

It sounds like the drive is going bad. I would back up any data that is on it and look into the warranty status of the drive.
