I was able to take apart a VX8350 I have with a broken screen. I don't see any way to replace just the hinges with replacing the whole top part of the phone including the screen. The ribbon cable from the screen runs through the hinge part into the main assembly of the phone. It appears the cable can't be removed without cutting it.
is the actual screen inside scratched or is the outer phone housing screen cover scratched? There is a difference. The actual LCD screen is inside the phone housing and is protected by the phones housing. If the actual LCD screen somehow was scratched it can be replaced very easily and usually inexpensively. Try Ebay for the LCD. If the phones outer clear housing is scratched you can also replace the housing either by purchasing the same phone used and using its housing or some "dummy" phones can be used for there housings also. If the scratch is not really bad I have used rubbing compound to remove fine scratches, good luck!
This sounds like you have a broken lcd screen. If you feel comfortable with replacing the screen you can purchase a new screen off ebay. If you are not comfortable I would recommend cellulardr.com they sound pretty reasonable as far as price goes.
I wouldn't recommend taking this phone apart as the side buttons never seem to go back together correctly thus creating more problems then before.
What you can try to do is go to an auto parts store and look for Meguars PLASTIX or any kind of automotive plastic polish and try to buff the scratches out. But if we're talking deep gouches then it may be best to just grin and bear it :)
