you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.

There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder. You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken) the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no way to repair this kind of breakage.

This is a common problem on these printers.
Cause is dirty lenses and or mirrors in the laser unit.
This happens over time (as the laser unit is not sealed), and particularly if you've had a leaky toner cartridge. Unfortunatly there are a lot of poorly remaufactured, leaky cartridges around for these printers.
Solution is remove laser unit, open it, clean lenses and mirrors (very carefully to avoid disturbing alignments, and scratching).
The laser unit is deep in the printer, so it's quite a lot of work, but very rewarding when you've fixed it.
Alternatives - buy a replacement laser unit and swap and clean old one at leisure, or get an exchange refurb printer - if you think your mechanical skills aren't up to it.
