Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

1 Answer

Display brightness I just fixed the power problem. The battery now charges fully. Odd thing... In the past when ever I work off the battery, the screen dimmed to save on power. But when the power was on, the screen would brighten... Now, the screen is dim when the power supply is in... and it brighten when it runs on battery. Which drains the battery way to fast...How'd this get switched? my screen brightness alternates between bright and dim, when my battery is charging on a/c or when the battery is fully charged

Ok on your keyboard there should be some way to adjust the brightness just plug in the laptop and adjust it to what you want then unplug the laptop and adjust it to what you want and it should keep that setting. if that does not work you can check the bios settings some laptop bios' have a brightness option.

My gateway 450rog computer screen wont come on after i press the power button why

Make sure the machine has power.

The battery might be dead, so connect your notebook to the AC power adapter and plug the adapter into a working AC outlet.

If you have a power strip or surge protector, make sure it is on.

If you are having trouble with battery power, recharge it if it has been fully discharged or replace it if necessary.

Check to make sure the computer is not in "sleep" or "hibernate" mode.

Press a key or the touchpad and wait for it to respond.

Try pressing the power button.

Make sure that you fully engage the power button.

You should press and hold the button for at least half a second but no more than three seconds for the machine to power on.

Adjust the screen's display brightness because it may be too dark. Press and hold the "FN" key and press the key with the icon to increase brightness.

This icon looks like an "up" arrow and a picture of the sun.

hope this helps

Battery Conditioning.

Anything and everything that uses rechargeable batteries should be conditioned initially and then on a regular basis in order to extend the life of your battery. These products can be your MP3 player, iPod, Cellular Phone, Cordless phone, laptop and other similar products with internal batteries or proprietary batteries. I have a 3 year old laptop that I can still get over 1.5 hours of battery life out of. The secret is conditioning your battery. The manner in which you condition your battery is the same whether it is a brand new product or you have had the product for a time. You must do the following: 1) Fully charge the item. 2) Use the item only on battery until he battery is completely drained. 3) Charge the item fully once again. 4) Fully drain the item a second time. 5) charge fully and use as you would normally for 60-90 days then repeat this process. I know it sounds pretty simple and t most people you would think this has no effect on battery life but instead of getting into the details of how and why this does work let me just impart that I have graduated from courses as an Electronics Technician and a Technologist and I have a e year old laptop, 4 year old Cellular phone and a 3 year old iPod all with battery lives that exceed what most people get from their items with much less use and age than mine. I was also offered a job with those geek squad people by their regional manager here but I turned them down, I hate robbing people and that is exactly what I believe the geek squad does here. This does work you just have to stick to it. Now Laptops are a difficult thing to condition because you have to go in and change the power settings regarding running off battery. What you want to do is set these in a way that will drain the battery completely in the shortest time, that means maximum brightness, never turn off display and never turn off hard drives. Best of luck to you all and

The first thing is to check if your battery is still okay by taking it off then measuring if it has some electric charge. If you are able to use a measuring meter then that's super but if you are not able to you can use a 24V truck light bulb and connecting with 2 wires to the positive and negative side of the battery. If it lights up brightly then the battery is okay. If it's got no electric charge then there are two possibilities either the battery is not okay or the charging system of the laptop is not working. Supposing your battery is okay. Then you need to have your laptop checked on the charging system. Remember laptop batteries do not last forever they actually deteriorate to until they are completely unrechargeable. So the Battery is my prime suspect.

One of the biggest power drains on the battery is a bright display. Turn down the brightness of your screen to about 50-60% (which is quite reasonable) and see how your battery life improves, also if you constantly have USB devices that are powering up from your computer, they will also drain the battery quickly. Wireless / Bluetooth adapters if not being used, should also be switched off. See how these tips work for you and then post me if you need more help.
Have a good one!

You either have a faulty a/c connection and need to buy a new one at any common electronics store, or your battery cannot hold a charge.

First, make sure it is fully charged and plugged in.
Look at the power indicator:
If it is not lit, no power is being supplied to the computer. Check the
If you are using on the battery, it may be low and unable to power
the computer. Connect the AC adapter to recharge the battery pack.
Make sure that the AC adapter is properly plugged into the computer
and to the power outlet.
If it is lit, check the following:
Is a non-bootable (non-system) disk in the external USB floppy drive?
Remove or replace it with a system disk and press <Ctrl> + <Alt> +
<Del> to restart the system.
Nothing appears on the screen.
The computer's power management system automatically blanks the screen to
save power. Press any key to turn the display back on.
If pressing a key does not turn the display back on, three things might be
the cause:
The brightness level might be too low. Press <Fn> + <→> (increase) to
adjust the brightness level.
The display device might be set to an external monitor. Press the display
toggle hotkey <Fn> + <F5> to toggle the display back to the computer.
If the Sleep indicator is lit, the computer is in Sleep mode. Press and release
the power button to resume.

Back light fine with power supply and goes off on battery.

I would need to know what operating system you are running because Vista has a setting for the display brightness when running on batteries. I would suspect that, that setting is turned down to conserve battery power. If this is not the case, then the battery may be too weak to put out the correct voltage requirements for the display. If you have Vista, go to the control panel > power options > In the left pane, look for the display brightness > here you can change the brightness for running on battery and for AC power.
