Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

GE mirowave spacemaker runs for 2 -3 seconds and shuts down.

My JVM1650CH012 does the same thing it runs for about three seconds and then stops. The display becomes garbled and the clock/calender has to be entered. Reset clock/calendar. Unplugged the unit for 30 seconds and then re-tried with same results above. It appears to shut down 2 seconds after the cooking time begins countdown.
What is the solution, I have seen similar and identical problems but never a solution. Is there and interanl thermostat or fuse that needs replaced and is the cost of this prohibitive. The unit is 3 years old.

Sadly, we hear of this over and over.

This is due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

Details are in their bulletin here. Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. The parts kit is similar to this one.

(Your model may use a different kit - this is shown for illustration purposes only).

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

They may send you a replacement magnetron. GE Customer Service is here.

Mirowave won't stop running; fan runs, light is on only way to shut down is to unplug unit. Model:JVM1650WH05

Sounds like the control circuitry inside is bad,,,or the relay or switching device is stuck on...If the control circuit is bad then you will need someone qualified to repair the circuit...A word of caution...if you decide to try to fix the unit yourself I will tyell you that there are very high voltages inside that can KILL. Please do not service unless you are trained in electrical safety

Have GE spacemaker XL. When running, it seems

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

Microwave runs for split second then shuts down blowing fuses in the kitchen. GE Spacemaker XL 1800.

Hi .. your problem is most likeliy inside the microwave itself. I would replace it. Or you can take it to a shop that does repairs to get a diagnoses and estimate .. but replacement might be the less costly.

GE Spacemaker shuts off after a few seconds and asks for the clock to be reset

Ge Spacemaker comes on ok but after a few seconds the noise level goes up significantly and it does not heat. It keeps running until the time runs out but it doesn't heat.

Sounds to me like you have a bad magnetron tube. Call GE Factory Service as there is either a 5 or 10 year parts warranty. Or schedule a service call online at www.geappliances.com

We are all in the same boat. It is very annoying. I think it is a sensor tripping.
