Problem turnining computer power on

For the past several weeks I have had a strange problem with my Inspiron 530S (Intel Core2 Duo): one day I turned it off and then could not turn it on again using the power button on the front. I tried several things and found something that works: I unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait about 30 second and plug it back in, at which point the power goes on again and the computer boots up. Also, even when I turn off the computer, using Windows XP menu, several lights including the power button light on the front of the computer stay on. It is only when I remove the power cord from the wall that these lights go off, and then as I said the computer boots up immediately when I plug it into the wall outlet again. Dell techincal support was no help in several phone calls I made. They wanted me to take the computer apart.

Your power supply is going bad, its an easy thing to replace and less than sixty dollars to replace for about a 450 watt power supply

Would a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual-Core CPU 2.4GHz Socket LGA775 1066MHz 4MB be compatible with a Dell 530s?

you need to know what motherboard you have. If you download a free program called Belarc and install it it will give you all the information about your pc. Once you know what motherboard you have then just google it and see what cpu's are compatible.

The Power Supply is bad dwadley.

Weak voltage power rail.

Primer;
1) IF all of the LED lights were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power. Just depends on what Processor it is.

The Dell Inspiron 530s series of desktop computers, come with an Intel processor.
Options are either a model of Core2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core, or Celeron.

Click on Specifications.

Replacing the Power Supply,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insp530s/EN/OM/HTML/parts.htm#wp1578680

In the middle column at the bottom, click on Power Supply.

The computer is an SFF design. Small Form Factor.

http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/inspiron-530s/pd

Because of the space saving design, the Power Supply is an SFF design also.
Makes it special.

Just one example, not a recommendation. You search for the best price and quality,

http://www.discountelectronics.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2782

Click on the Power Supply image.
(Whew! That get's great big! NOT!)

An average ATX power supply's dimensions (Used in most mid-size, and full size desktop computers), is approximately;
6 Inches Wide, 5-1/2 Inches Long, and 3-1/2 Inches Tall.

The SFF power supply dimensions in your desktop computer, is around
4-1/2 Inches Wide, 3-1/2 Inches Tall, and 5-1/2 Inches Long.

The dimensions are what makes it special.

1) Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, (AT the surge protector side. NEVER unplug at the Power Supply side), computer case open.

2) Follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static BEFORE working on the computer.

Again, computer on a table.
A bed, couch, or directly on a carpeted floor, are HIGH areas of Static.

If your table is on a carpeted floor, refrain from swinging your feet across the carpet.

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case, (Unpainted surface), to relieve your body of Static.

IF you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

3) Opening the computer case;

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insp530s/EN/OM/HTML/parts.htm#wp1508953

4) You will have to disconnect all power cables, leading from the Power Supply. (Upper rear of computer case)
Make notes, and drawings as to where each cable plugs into.

If you have problems when reconnecting the power cables, Relax.
Just post in a Comment, and I will guide you step by step.

The plastic Front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the cables (Wires) from the Front Panel go to; is the Front Panel header.

DEFINITELY make notes, and drawings, as to what Front Panel cables, plug to what contact pins, BEFORE touching anything inside the computer.

If you accidentally knock a cable off a contact pin, (Or more than one),
I Do NOT have the pinout to give you.

(The Front Panel cables may all go to one connector, that fits over the Front Panel header contact pins. I do not know.
Haven't worked on one yet, and have not owned one.

Each Front Panel header, and Front Panel cable connections, are specific to that computer.

The rest of the technology used inside the computer, is just standard desktop computer technology. )

For additional questions please post in a Comment.
(And/Or to have me explain further on anything I have stated )

Here is a link for your computer's manual:

Follow the procedures outlined and be sure to clean the surface of the heat-sink (alcohol works) and reapply thermal grease compound to the surface of the new processor.

Blank screen on desktop (dell inspiron 530s); requesting a password.

Someone has turned on the BIOS password on you and therefore the PC will not let you boot up unless you enter the correct password. The problem is you cannot turn off the password option unless you know the password. I would start by asking other people who had access to you computer what they set the password to. If nobody comes clean, then you will have to call Dell Tech Support to get them to reset the password for you. They will give you a master BIOS password to override the one set and turn off the option.
