Sure you can try system restore and restore it to the day before the problem occurred but if it has been a while then it is possible that there may not be a restore point available to restore it to
And if that is the case then open "network connections" in the control panel and "right click" your connection that says limited or no connectivity and select "status" from the drop down menu then click the "support" tab on top and where it says "IP Address" look to see if it starts with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx number and if it does start with 169 then that means that your computer was unable to acquire an IP address from your router or modem and it assigned itself a default machine address of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx is just space filler for numbers they could be different numbers) And so if it does say 169 then click the repair button and it will try to acquire a new address and if it is still unable to acquire an address and you end up with a 169 number again then if you have a router go over to the router and unplug the power cord for 10 seconds and plug it back in and then click repair again and it should work.

Most routers assign an IP address that starts with a 192.168

if you don’t have a router and your modem is plugged directly into your computer then try unplugging the modem and plugging it back in but wait for the modem to initialize (boot-up) all the way (you will know when all of the lights on the modem are on) before clicking repair button.

if none of the above helps then let me know and ill take you to the next step in fixing the problem

I updated the bios on the dell vostro 1000 and it wouldn't start. The power light stays on and you can hear the fan. This is followed by a long beep and 2 short beeps while the screen stays black.

Hi alkeith...
Turn on the computer while tapping F8, this will take you into the Safe Mode.
While your in the Safe Mode you can do a system restore.
Restore your computer back to an earlier time when it was working before you installed the bios change.
Left click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
This should solve your problem.

How do I system restore my Dell Vostro 1000?

Resetting a Dell Vostro to the factory settings allows the user to restore the Dell Vostro to the original operating condition as if it was just taken out of the box. Dell system includes a restore utility called 'Dell Symantec System Restore' to reset or restore your Dell system to factory setting.

Step 1: Before reset any Dell Vostro laptop, backup your all important data and programs, otherwise you may lose it. It is recommended to use an external storage device for your entire data backup, so that you couldn't lose it in any sudden occurring issue...

Step 2: Remove any other unnecessary external drive and restart your Dell Inspiron laptop.

Step 3: Press 'F8' key continue until 'Advanced Boot Options' wouldn't be appear.

Step 4: Use your keyboard arrow key to select 'Repair Your Computer' from the list and hit 'Enter'.

Step 5: Now click 'Next' and login as the administrator account.

Step 6: Click 'Dell Factory Image Recovery and Data Safe options', select your language option and click 'Next'.

Step 7: Click the check box 'Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition' and click 'Next' to start Dell Vostro reset process...

This process will erase all your previous changes that have been made to the Dell Vostro laptop and reset the configuration settings to factory setting.

hi mike,

i just had the same problem with a dimension. what solved the issue was a system restore to the first day the computer ran. this is way better than having the computer reformatted. once the system is restored to the first operating date, just turn your automatic update ON and let it rip.

hope this helps.

best regards,

How do you format the hard drive on Dell Inspiron 1000. I have the restore system disk and don't have anything on it worried about losing...just need to format and start fresh..it's got too many issues and...

I'd put ubuntu on it, if it's a inspiron 1000, should run ok. If you have the restore disks from dell, just turn it on, pop in the cd, then reboot, the pc should boot from cd, then just follow the promps, make sure you delete all partitions, format thorough (not quick NTFS), use the whole disk for windows

Looking how to do a system restore

The easy way would be using the 'system restore" included in MS Windows.

-Click the Start button, point to All Programs→ Accessories→ System Tools, and then click System Restore.
-Ensure that Restore my computer to an earlier time is selected and click Next.
-Click a calendar date to which you want to restore your computer (when everything worked fine)
-Click Next.
The Restoration Complete screen appears after System Restore finishes collecting data and then the computer restarts.
6 After the computer restarts, click OK.

My dell inspiron 1000

Can you see the Dell splash screen after turning it on at least? Check first your hard drive by doing diagnostics. Hit F12 for the diagnostics options to test its functionality. If everything passes, then there is still a way to recover the files. Are there any files on your computer that needs to be backed up? You need to consider this before doing the restoration options.
