Question about Maytag Legacy Series Top Load Washer

5 Answers

I noticed machine trying to wash and spin at the same time.

Machine also makes a knocking sound at times when machine is washing. almost sounds like the knocking sound it makes when it finishes a wash cycle to stop. can also be refered to like a rod knocking in a car.

noise is coming from motor area , there is nothing inside machine. I have always had to re-set machine on spin after it completed its wash cycle because clothes where still wet.as time has progressed the machine now makes knocking sound. i am thinking transmission problem or motor.

    Sounds like the right solution

I noticed the machine will spin for a few minutes , then start to slow down , then start spinning again. I think this is why I have to select extended spin once the cycle has completed so the clothes will be dry enough to put in dryer.

What you should do, is remove the outer panel of the machine and then run it to determine the exact part that is causing the noise. the bolts will be on the back and/or bottom of the machine and the panel should pop off nicely. Once you do this, find out where the noise is exactly coming from and if you need help identifying the part, you can send me a picture otherwise just post back here.

I am guessing that the knocking noise may be caused by a loose tub weight. This would normally be worse with heavy loads and would not be present on spin with no washing in. This is because the knocking noise is caused when the tub (or outer drum) shakes about on spin. Without washing inside the drum the tub doesn't move. Another symptom of a loose tub weight is grey concrete dust under the washing machine. Warning: These days most washing machines have plastic tubs and over tightening a tub weight bolt can easily shear the bracket resulting in a new tub being required. Try loctite. Often, once a tub weight has come loose the plastic tub is damaged anyway especially if it isn't caught early enough

Hi
The drive belt (or belts) of a washing machine may become worn or damaged, causing noisy operation or stopping the washer entirely. A damaged drive belt is easy to replace. Remove the back panel of the washer to gain access to the belt. To remove the belt:

Step 1: Loosen the bolt on the motor bracket and move the motor to put slack in the belt.

Step 2: Remove the old belt and stretch a new one into place on the pulleys.

Step 3: To put tension on the new belt, use a hammer handle or a short pry bar to push the motor into position while you tighten the bolt in the adjustable bracket. The belt should have about 1/2 inch deflection when you press on it at the center point, midway between the pulleys. If the belt is too loose, it will slip on the pulleys, causing the machine to malfunction. If the belt is too tight, it will wear very quickly and will probably become so hot that it will start to smoke or smell.

Loose pulleys can also cause problems. Most pulleys are fastened to shafts with setscrews around the hub of the pulley. These screws must be tight or else the pulley or belt will slip. The resulting malfunction may seem to be caused by a faulty motor, but it can be corrected by tightening the pulleys and adjusting the belt. For this reason, always check the belts and pulleys before working on the motor.
thank you.please rate it..

Lots of this design washer do this. The brakes have grease residue from the spin tube brearing this is making them stop the spin tub too fast. The intertia of this is the thump. To properly resolve this the unit will need to be dissasembled and the brake pads cleaned and the drum cleaned.  This sounds like the brakes have gotten some residue on them and are grabbing way too hard. The banging is the tub stopping too fast and the torque from this makes the tub bang into the cabinet. Just one bang at the end of a spin.

Kenmore front loading HE3 makes knocking sounds during spin cycle

Ours started knocking several months ago and then progressed to a high pitched sound when in the spin cycle. I manually turned the drum and heard and felt a bearing roughness. I lifted the drum assembly and felt a fair amount of play, which I think the initial knocking noise came from. On the sears web site a new rear drum mount cost 293.00. Today we went and bought a LG model wm2455hw at Home depot, on sale until 2/20/08. I couldn't see paying to repair a machine that only lasted four years.
