Question about Dell W4200 42 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television

1 Answer

Using an over the air antenna I get all channels but one.

I have a Dell 4200 TV with a digital tuner.  Using an over the air antenna I get all channels but one, our local CBS affiliate.  It is on digital channel 50.  I get other stations that are on the same tower here in town.  Strangely, I have had times where the CBS channel will come in with a strong signal, but if I change the channel, it never comes back, even if I manually search for the channel.  Dell replaced the TV, but that did not solve the problem.  We get analog reception of this channel just fine.  With digital only TV coming, I am not sure what to do.

I have the exact same problem. Local CBS digital will not tune. It's broadcast over RF channel 32. It used to come in when the TV was brand new, but has since stopped working. Our other TV shows the signal strength at 89%+, so I know our reception is good. I've got the Dell in the service shop now, but the technician is having problems finding replacement parts for it.

I have the same problem too, in my case ABC, but I can receive clear signals from a weaker station that's over 50 miles away, but not the local station that up to one point, was my strongest and clearest signal. It just stopped tuning it in one day, though all the other TVs in the house get the signal fine.

Unfortunately in my case it's not the antenna. The family room TV gets the digital CBS station just fine, and is wired to the same antenna as the Dell plasma TV in the entertainment room.

The local TV repairman could not find a new tuner replacement for the Dell. He recommended an external tuner box. For a HD ATSC tuner, that's about $180+ not including an HDMI cable. It's not the solution I was looking for, but it looks like the only HD option now.

I experience the same thing on a day to day basis. The key, is location of the antenna. Depending on where your antenna is located, determines if u can recieve local CBS analog v. digitial. I actually tried sticking aluminum foil to my old rabbit ear antenna legs. to my surprise, I even picked up digital channel I never knew existed. Besides, when the signal transmit in Digital, u are already prepared. Your local CBS afilliate station will be accesable on maybe 2 or 3 channels. example:

Channel 10 analog

Channel 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 digital HD will all broadcast the same programming.

hope this helps u out.

Using a digital antenna to channel scan for broadcasted channels

It is no different that channel scanning for cable or analog over-the-air channels. You simply ensure that you have selected the digital tuner of the set prior to scanning. Some older flat panel sets do not have integrated digital tuners. A digital antenna alone will not allow these sets to receive digital broadcast channels. A converter box is needed to convert the digital broadcast signals to analog for the tuner in the set. Also, sets that do not have digital tuners may not support the resolution rate of digital TV broadcasts. Most digital HD broadcasts are 720p and a few are 1080p.

How to install indoor digital tv antenna to a lcd tv & pickup digi channels

First, the LCD TV has to have a digital tuner in it. Older ones may not. If it does, then you attach the antenna connector to the TV connection that is marked TV IN or CABLE. Then, in the TV's menu, you would need to ensure that the digital tuner is selected. Once that is done, then, still in the menu, perform an "ON AIR" channel scan to find and lock in whatever digital channels that the antenna can detect.

Do I need a digital converter box & antenna to get

It really depends upon your TV. If your TV is newer and has an ATSC tuner in it, then no - you'll just need the antenna. However, if your TV is older and doesn't have an ATSC tuner, you'll need an external tuner, what you're calling digital convertor, and an antenna to get the local channels. Use Google or another search engine to find the specifications for your TV to see if it has an ATSC tuner. Or, connect an antenna to your TV, run the channel scan (off-air antenna mode) to see if you get any local channels. If you don't, you'll need the external tuner.

No TV broadcast picture. Is this a tuner problem?

yes it does seem to be a tuner problem , I also wonder what happens when you use the auto channel finder and tuner usually found in the set up section of the menu ? As well as was your TV working before and receiving input via the antennae but has now stopped working in this regard ? I also noted that attaching an analog to digital converter box worked fine , so your TV is capable of receiving a signal via that method , dose the converter box use your antennae input jack or a video jack to send the converted signal into your TV ? if it is using your antennae jack then it may not be a tuner problem .
