HI
FIRST CHECK LIMIT SWITCH.IF IT IS NOT THE PROBLEM THEN IT IS DEFROST HEATER.

This component is a heating element located on the evaporator coil. When the refrigerator or freezer switches to the defrost cycle, the defrost heater is turned on to melt the frost in the compartment. Failure of the defrost heater causes failure to defrost.

Test the element with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. To gain access to the heating element, remove the compartment's wall panels. Clip one probe of the VOM to each element terminal. The meter should read between 5 and 20 ohms. If it doesn't, the heating element is faulty and should be replaced. Replace the heater with a new one of the same type and electrical rating. Connect the new heater the same way the old one was connected.

You may need to clean the condenser coils. This should be done about every 6 to 12 months.

Other possibilities

  • Check the door gaskets for proper sealing, especially the bottom section.

  • Clean the gasket surface where your door gaskets meets the metal with warm soapy water

DeF error means that you need to defrost the unit. Leave the unit unplugged overnight and defrost completely.

If DEF error occurs after you have already done a complete defrost, that means thet there is a problem on the evaporator system that is preventing coils form freezing up.

In this case you will need to replace the evaporator fan or the thermostat after testing the parts.

Pull refrig out from the wall and unplug . Remove the 8" x 10 " panel covering the main control board . On this board , unplug the blue plug with 3 larger wires going to it . The sequence looks like this : wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Use a piece of wire , with both ends stripped about 1/4 " , and insert an end into wire2 and wire3 . Plug refrig back in . Look inside the freezer at the back bottom , and see if you see a red glow . It may take about 30 seconds for the glow to appear . If no glow appears , the defrost heater located at the bottom of the coils ( glass tube ) is probably shorted . Pt # WR51X10042 . Also replace the defrost thermostat Pt # WR50X10068 . To access these parts , the inside freezer panel has to be removed . If you do get a red glow , then the main control board is bad Pt # WR55X10656 .

Frezzer side stop freezing but frigde side seemto work now freezer working again

Many, many times the reason a freezer stops working is because it's been open or ajar too long. The coils all freeze over and it will take a long time of being unplugged and open to defrost them. I generally take the back panel of the freezer off and use a hair dryer to warm things up. After defrosting, all moisture must be dried up before plugging back in. Now you have air flow over the dry coils and all the future foods will be happy.

I have a Kenmore Cold Spot fridge, freezer on top. Fridge is warm, and freezer keeps freezing up on sides and bottom. I cleaned it all out, defrosted it, and it still freezes up and fridge still won't get...

Is this a self defrost model? Frost inside the freezer could be an air leak around the door gasket. Remove the back panel in the freezer and completely defrost the coils. Is the fan running in the freezer. That will make the frig not be cool. With the door closed peek in the gasket to make sure the light is shutting off, this will warm a frig also.

Refridgerator and freezer running warm

Your temperature is probably set to high turn it down to about 4 for a couple hours and then back up like 7 dont turn both controls up all the way or it will freeze up on you. You could even unplug it for an hour and let it thaw out then turn it back on the freezer to 7 and the fridge like halfway or a little more than half.... see if this works for you...........Have a good week end! : )

Freeze will not freeze.

I had a similar problem. The frost in the back is an indication that your coils are frozen. This could be from food packages falling out of the freezer drawers in the back and blocking the air circulation vents or maybe the freezer door was not closed completely and letting moist/humid air in and freezing the coils.
For me it was the first problem listed.I had to completely empty the freezer and Frig. and take the back panel off in the freezer. There you will see the coils and lots of ice!
1. Remove all items from the frig. and freezer and unplug frig.
2. Pull all the freezer drawers out.
3. On my GE side by side I took the light cover off and removed the bulb. There you will see two panel screws. Remove the screws.
4. Now pull out the mouldings on each side and you should be able to remove the panel.
5. Take a hair drier and completely defrost all the ice from the coils.
Be sure to keep plenty of towels handy for all the water mess. Remember to keep an eye on the drain tray in the back of the frig. and use a sponge to collect the water that will build up.
Hope this helps!.....

Kitchenaid refrigerator w/bottom freezer french doors

please check the air flow to the refrigerator side. it could be a stuck damper motor or damper thermostat. if the fan inside the freezer is running, you should be able to feel cold air coming out off the vents in the refrigerator side. you might have to press the button light switch on the panels to run the fan.
