My dyson dc 17 does not work when in the upright position

It works when the handle is back and has normal suction, but as soon as I move it to the upright position, it shuts down. What is wrong?

I have the same problem. Was working with the handle removed and suddenly the vaccuum stopped. I thought it was full, so emptied the canister and put back together. It won't turn on in the upright position, it works fine when you place the handle back on and use as a regular vaccuum, but when you put the handle upright, it shuts off. This disables the function to use the handle for corners/edges.

I have the same problem.  Was working fine, then just shut off.  Took it apart, cleaned everything, including filter.  Now only works with handle in back position, shuts off when handle up, but has very little if any suction.  Has always worked great.  It is less than 2 years old.

You should try calling Dyson. IF you registered your vacuum then it should be under warranty.

No, it is not how it shuts off the beater bar. The beater bar shuts off automatically when put into the upright position and just the suction works...when the vacuum is working properly. Our problem is that the whole vacuum just shuts off.

"My Dyson animal does not work when it is in the upright position or if I try to shut off the beater brush.

I need a better detailed explanation of your problem. What you have is very vague. Does the brush motor work, does it power off right away, any high pitched noises? Details are key.

I had this same issue today, after not being able to find a solution, I took apart the brush area by unscrewing the three simple screws... my belt had a TON of dog and cat hair built up inside it so I cleaned that out and it did the trick.

Dyson DC 25 power shuts off in upright position

To clarify, do you mean the suction and brush motion shut off in the upright position, or that the entire unit shuts off?

If the latter, most Dyson uprights shut off the brush unit in the full upright position and shunt the suction into the handle for use with the accessories. There is also an on/off for the brush, next to the main power button for the DC25. If it's off ( or stuck that way), no brush motion. The manual also notes, 'for use, turn on power and click the foot pedal in back to recline the unit.' (Link to manual here:
http://www.dyson.com/medialibrary/files/dyson/support/downloads/uk/floorcare/manuals/DC25_Manual.pdf See Page 8). The
'High Reach Cleaning' section also notes that the brush bar won't rotate when the vacuum is in the full upright position.

If you are completely losing power, the manual notes that the unit will shut off if the bar is jammed, or if there is a significant line blockage that makes the motor overheat. If this is happening, check the accessory line in the handle for blockage.

Good Luck :-)

Air escaping from top of handle

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
It's part of the design of our upright vacuums that when the machine is standing upright, the suction is diverted to the wand, ready for above-floor cleaning. You can find out more about how the hose, wand and tools work on our Support page:

http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1255&product=DC28-ANIMAL

It sounds like your machine is working normally, but if you'd like any further assistance please email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com and we'll be in touch as soon as possible.
Best wishes,

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC28. I wouldn't suggest attempting to dismantle the cleaner yourself, as this will void the warranty.

When I tilt my Dyson DC 17 Animal upright so that I can use the hose, the vacuum powers off. As soon as I tilt it back down, it turns back on.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. When you stand the cleaner upright, the brushbar motor is designed to shut off automatically. However, the suction motor should continue to run unless you turn it off manually with the on/off switch. If both motors seem to be shutting off when you stand the cleaner upright, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly so we can resolve this issue for you as quickly as possible.

You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

My dyson 17 wand does not work. When it is on and you stand it upright it turns off

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

If the suction is good from the base but not from the wand, this would indicate that there is a blockage in the wand handle or hose. To test this, stand the machine upright and release the wand handle. Switch the machine on and test the suction from the top of the wand with your hand. If its poor, remove the wand handle from the hose and try the suction at the top of the hose. If its good here, then there is a blockage in the wand handle.

If the sction from the top of the hose is poor, you can remove the hose to check this for any splits or blockages. If it needs to be replaced, you can buy a replacement online at www.dyson.com.

Alternatively, should you any further help or advice with your Dyson, please contact our Helpline on 1866MYDYSON.

Kind regards

No suction on wand of Dyson DC14 Animal

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

It sounds as though the wand handle is blocked. To check this, remove the wand/hose from the machine as if you were going to use it to vacuum the stairs. Switch the machine on and test the suction at the top of the wand handle with your hand. If the suction from the wand is poor, remove the wand from the hose and test the suction again from the top of the hose. If the suction here is good, then you know the wand handle is blocked. If the suction is poor at the hose, you can remove the hose from the machine and clear any blockages here.

For the full blockage procedure please visit the support section on our website at www.dyson.com.

Kind regards

Dyson DC 14 animal bagless--unable to use wand

Hi.

Try these tests & tell me the results.

Remove the hose & wand completely from the machine it unclips at the bottom of the back.

Leave handle in full upright position & switch on do you still get the sound of something blocked ?

If yes remove the (U) shaped inspection port again at bottom back of machine now repeat last test what happens ?

Please reply with your answers.

No suction in upright position

Check the adapters at the bottom. They're supposed to move cleanly when you lower the handle. It's pretty obvious if there's an air gap when you lower the handle, and you should hear the suction in the air gap.

And...call Dyson...their support is great!
