Question about Briggs & Stratton 8,000 Watt 16 Hp Portable Generator #1934

1 Answer

Brand new briggs & Stratton 8000 watt generator....

Will not provide any power. None of the circuit breakers are tripped. The rocker switch circuit breaker switch is on. I have tried several different appliances that all work fine when plugged in elsewhere.

Thanks

Same problem, less than 40 hours on unit but it is 2 1/ years old. Service department sain wire came loose in the stator and shorted it out. They said it was not worth fixing. Appparenltly Troybuilt has succumbed to the China market and now sells JUNK. Lowes was the store I purchase it at.

How to test for a shorted generator stator

Sounds like you have a dead short. Check the outlets for any debris, metal or copper. Check the backside if the outlet for anything grounding onto the unit. The breaker is tripping to protect the outlet and anything plugged into it. The fire shooting out of the outlet is an arc flash caused by the dead short. You can also try disconnecting and replacing the outlet . If the problem persists, disconnect the starter and try to bench test it with a multimeter. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Troubleshoot troy bilt generator

Check that the GFI receptical is not tripped Check that there are no blown fuses or tripped breakers Verify that the engine is running at full RPM If there is still no output, then either the field needs to be flashed (look on line to find a video on how to do this - YouTube), or the generator will need further diagnostics.

I have a briggs and stratton 8500/5500 generator which I am using to power an air conditioner on a camper trailer. I just recently started having a problem where the one circuit breaker keeps tripping when...

Hello, First figure out what the load per leg is on your generator. Are you using the 240 Volts because this is two 120 AC volts legs and they are 120 degrees out of phase with each other.

You will need to figure what the power factor is for each phase on this generator. To figure the power/wattage by using ohm's law. Voltage times Current will give you Watts. Example: If the generator is generator 240 volts the maximum current available is about 23 amps. The maximum current for 120 volts will 46 amps. Therefore, the maximum current per 120 volt circuit is 23 amps for one circuit and 23 amps for the second 120 circuit..

I would try replacing the circuit breaker with the same amperage breaker. Also, watch what the generator load is per circuit. You can install current meter for each circuit. This will give a good indication of which circuit is pulling more load than the other circuit. GB...stewbison

Every tme I plug in an extenson cord the circuit breaker trips.

Try a different cord and see if it works ok. If the circuit breaker trips without anything plugged into the extension cord then the chances are that there is a short in the socket of the cord or it is wired incorrectly.

I,ve got an Briggs and Statton elite 10000 watt generator, it wont supply enough power to the house evrything is dim lights etc, Ive used it amny times before it will pretty much run the whole house...

Does it appear to be running as fast as it always did, as in RPM's are same as usual? If there is a fuel problem and rpm's decrease due to that, voltage will drop as well. Other causes may be internal problems with generator circuits etc, and will need technician to troubleshoot it properly.
You can try increasing the throttle manually and see if voltage comes up.

Briggs and stratton generator keeps throwing the circuit breaker

Power tools CAN draw heavy loads if the voltage or frequency is off. Both of those CAN be a fault of the generator.

Check the frequency by plugging in a clock with a moving second hand and time it for 10 minutes against a quartz clock. ALSO do a voltage check with another voltmeter.

The 5500 Watt generator should hold 40 amps. Power tools with induction motors like some table saws take a large starting load near this value AND would be sensitive to low voltage AND especially low frequency, both of which will cause much higher current draw.

One MIGHT have to resort to put an oscilloscope on the output to make sure the waveform of the AC output is normal..
