Sony Handycam CCD-F77 won't power up

Nothing happens when I connect either the battery or the AC adapter to the camera. We have a tape still in it that we would like to get out.

The camera is an old Sony Handycam CCD-F77

Sony F77's are known for bad power supply circuit boards. I have one that powers up enough to eject or insert a tape but will do nothing else. Recently I took it to a repair shop. Paid $30 to have it diagnosed but elected not to pay the extra $164-$215 to have the board rebuilt.

It is difficult to find people who will even diagnose these old camcorders, but the repairman said the shops that rebuild the boards get 10-15 a week because people really like the high quality of this particular model. I paid over $1500 for mine in 1983 or so and may yet decide to have it rebuilt.

The repair shop I took mine to is Westronix in Salem, Oregon.

The camcorder casset is stuck in the eject position. reset does nothing for the problem.

for tape loading issues,do a power reset procedure. make sure ac adapter is not connected.set cam to off position.remove the battery and leave the camera without power for at least a minute.use the ac adapter and turn cam on.see if this resolves it.if not...service is required.

Sony ccd-f55 Handycam

If it is a CCD-F555 the battery charger is also the AC Power adapter. There is a switch that states VTR...switch to it and plug into the camera and it should work. Have you had any other problems with your camera. I got mine in Japan when I was stationed over there and it will play back the tapes; however, it will not show the camera in the viewfinder. I know the lens is working because it will autofocus. I just can't see it. My email address is ds4190@excite.com
