Coolpix S210 Lens Error

I recently borrowed my sons Coolpix S210 and took many pics while on vacation. I turned it on at one point to take more pics and the screen showed the saved pic at first then the lens whirred and clicked and the screen gave "Lens Error !" I have looked on the web for reasons and found that this may be a common problem with this camera. Do you have any information or do I just need to buy him a new one?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

We bought our daughter this camera for Christmas in '08. About 9months into the ownership the lens on her camera would not contract. We followed the suggestions from the posting and they did not work. We sent the camera back to Nikon and much to our surprise they found grit in her lens and we would have to pay $100 to get it fixed. I will not ever purchase a Nikon and would suggest that anything thinking about it simply rethink the purchase and go with a Sony. I have a Sony and have never had any problems!

I had the same problem. The camera was working fine, then 1/2 hour after my last picture, I turned it on, it started beeping and gave me a Lens Error message and wouldn't take any more pictures! I can't get the camera to turn on for more then 6 seconds now. The lens tries to focus, beeps, gives a Lens Error - then turns off.

I contacted Nikon Customer Service, explaining the Lens Error problem and also posted all the other posts online with the same problem. They said I need to ship it so they can fix the problem and let me know the cost. I've read other online posts with this same problem who've sent it in and they say it's not covered by warrenty, and they'll have to pay to have it fixed.

In my opinion, this is a manufactures defect and they should fix these camera's free of charge.

I wish Nikon would stand behind their camera!

Mine did this. I assume the lens won't pop up as it normally did?

To fix mine, I wedged a small screwdriver into the lens and then turned it on, gently nudging the lens out. It worked great and I haven't had the issue again yet.

Just a little help is all it likely needs to pop that lens out.

Hitting it against the hand while the camera is off works. Be persistent.
Nikon sucks for making me hit my camera on purpose.

Not sure if you still have this issue, but I just encountered it myself and was able to fix it, THANK GOD! I tried all the stuff listed online, to the point of slamming it on my mouse pad, etc. I wanted to take it apart but the screws are too small... finally, figuring it was a lost cause anyway, I put the camera on my desk, lens down (contacting the table, as it was stuck open and jammed at an angle) and applied gradually increasing pressure. Eventually I noticed the smaller portion of the lense extension start to recede a bit into its casing. I tried again with more pressure and something snapped - making a sickening noise, I might add - and the lense closed and shut normally. I tried the power and it worked like a charm, no obvious defects so far.

Good luck, hope this helped.

I have the same problem with the Nikon S210 - and of course the warranty ran out last month. this is clearly a defect and Nikon should stand behind their products. Jeremy White

Try repeatly turning on and off the unit by removing the battery each time the lens error screen pops up...that worked for me this summer when mine S210 got jammed with a sand particle. The next level is to get access to the front cover. That requires more knowledgethan I'm currently aware of as I've only removed the back cover and the LCD retainer plate. Tomorrow I'm going after the front cover and I'll let you know if I'm successful. The entire camera seems to be accessible with a small phillips head screwdriver and a lot of patience. Taking apart an S210 requires great peace of mind...don't go in until you're in a good space...

S210 Lens Error

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced or replaced.

My camera worked fine one day, then it was in my purse. When I went to use it the light was on and the screen said there was a lens error. Everytime I try to turn it on now it makes a grinding noise and...

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

I think I answered this one earlier. Is the lens stuck? If so, help it out with a little screw driver. Worked for me!
