This can happen when the lens in the DVD/CD ROM goes bad. I have seen this mulitple times. You most likely have two lenses one for DVDs and one for CDs. The CD lens simply went bad. To fix is you will need to replace the whole drive. Individual lenses aren't sold to the public.
