Question about Carrier Heating & Cooling

Outside unit on heat pump is freezing up and I think the defrost cycle is not working. It is a 38C00 and I need a schematic.

You'll need to replace the defrost board and thermostat to board hooked on to unit.

Senville mini split displays a "defrost" symbol????


It's a heat pump and that is how they work. But it shouldn't be cycling so much unless you live in Minnesota? The colder it is outside the more chance that the outside coil will freeze so it will go into defrost. It may be low on charge or have leak as well. Call a tech to verify.

In freezing weather the heat pump efficiency drops. The freezing is normal. The equipment has a board and sensor to defrost your heat pump. Now this system can fail but freezing rain and snow get pulled into the unit get pulled into the unit coil and freeze blocking airflow. You can defrost the unit by turning it to cooling. This is what the defrost board does automatically.

I have an armstrong heat pump and am curious about how the defrost cycle works.


Rather lengthy but here it is.
The outside unit(heat pump) has a reversing valve, a defrost board, a crankcase heater, a metering device(txv or piston) and an accumulator. This is what makes it a heat pump instead of a straight air condensing unit.
When in the heat mode the outside unit becomes the evaporator and the inside unit becomes the condensing unit.Before somebody corrects me i am just stating what is different in a heat pump.
When the system goes into defrost several things happen. First the system has to call for a defrost cycle. This happens on a time and temperature sequence. When the defrost board times out for a defrost check(the defrost board has a jumper pin to determine how long before the system will check for a temperature(thermal switch) is open or closed. This switch is in the normally open position. It will close at 35 degrees(depends on the switch). This switch is located on the copper line in the condensing unit. If this switch is closed then the system will go into defrost. Now for the good part. This will shut down the outside fan, switch the reversing valve, and the outside unit will essentially go into cool mode. Because the fan is off the compressor will heat up very rapidly and the refrigerant passing thru the coils will be hot as well. This will cause the ice buildup on the outside unit to melt(defrost). This will continue until a temperature is met or it times out. Then the system will return to the heat cycle. One other thing, depending on how your system is wired the inside unit will turn on the auxillary heat while the defrost cycle is in process. That way you will still have heat while the defrost cycle is in process.
It is not uncommon for steam to come out of your outside unit while this is going on. It can also be quiet noisey sometimes.

I just moved into this home and am wondering what EM heat is compared to just Heat and my outside unit is full of frost what do I need to do?


Hi, EM stands for emergency heat. You should only need to use it if the outdoor unit does not operate. You have what we call a heat-pump. If the outdoor coil is iced up, it should go into a defrost cycle to melt away the ice. You will know when it does as you will see steam coming up from the unit as though it is on fire. The outdoor fan will also shut down during this process. These units will defrost using time and temperature to defrost the coil. If the ice continues to build-up, and does not defrost every couple of hours, I would say you have a faulty defrost board or defrost thermostat. There is not alot you can do as these are very complicated systems to work on. You will more then likely have to call out a service tech to check this outdoor unit for you.It also should have heat strips in the outdoor unit for EM heat if the outdoor unit fails. If it is iced up it is on and running. Thats what I would do is keep an eye on it to see if it does defrost, and if not, you will need to get a tech out to check it. It takes special equipment to check these units. Please keep me posted.

New heat pump system freezing, questioning wiring.


W1 and E on stat need tied together. When W1 comes on wire where all heat elements come on. On the outside unit defrost board set the 45-60-90 to 45 and see if that takes care of the frost problem.

I have a heat pump and it freeze up


If you are referring to the outside unit freezing up, the issue is in the defrost cycle. The defrost cycle works something like this: The unit reverses the flow of freon causing the inside coil to blow cold air into the conditioned space and the outside coil is now working like an a/c unit, it gets warm to melt the frost/ice. The inside unit electric heat strips come on so you do not notice the cold air being blown in. The fan on the outside unit stops running to allow the coil to get good and warm.
Now the unit should go into the defrost cycle every 90 minutes or so. It should not terminate the cycle untill the coil is clear of frost. There is an "Klixon" type termostat that measures the temperature of the outside coil. This is most likely the problem. It is prematurely terminating the defrost cycle. I'd start there first.

Hi, the outdoor unit will start to freeze when it is cold outside, but also it should go into a defrost mode to melt this ice either by the defrost board or defrost thermostat. You will know as steam will rise like smoke and some folks think it is on fire. If it never goes into defrost, get back to us and we can go through some things to check. Merry Christmas,

Tempstar heat pump: want to bypass defrost thermostat


Don't attempt to bypass defrost mode. If it's cold enough to use as a heat pump, it's cold enough to need the defrost cycle.

It sounds like a sensor issue, although it may be the controller board.

Unless you know how to work on equipment like this, I urge you to get a professional to service the unit for you.

Condenser frost's up on my heat pump


On a heat pump the system reverses during the heat cycle to bring in outside heat that will cause the outside coils to ice up. There is a defrost timer or pc board to send the unit into defrost every so often. This is a common problem with heat pumps or possibly low or refrigerant. Heat pumps will freeze up at low outside temps, but unless your in the Artic right now that shouldn't be a problem.

HEAT UNTILL THE LOAD HAS BEEN REACHED AND THE HEAT PUMP CAN CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN IT.
