Question about Toshiba Satellite M45-S2652 Notebook

Toshiba Satellite laptop takes over 20 minutes to start up

I am a pretty savvy comp user, but this has me baffled. My Toshiba laptop is less than 2 years old and now takes over 20 minutes to start. I defragged, scandisk, registry, it's none of that. I also noticed the DVDRW no longer opens when I press the button. Is it possible that a failed hard drive could stall the start up process? When I view the startup log in the DOS-type display, it just hangs on the memory counter for nearly 15 min, then starts. Once started, the computer runs slowly but is still workable. I bought an external USB hard drive and an OEM copy of WIndows XP ,but I don't know how to wipe the hard drive and still have the external cd drive work so I can reinstall windows and not turn my laptop into a doorstop. As I said before, I'm pretty savvy (in software/windows tech support for 4 years) so you can "speak geek" with your answer. Thanks!

Hi Marshall, and welcome to FixYa,

Have you tried everything?

Perform the steps given below to increase your system performance.

Uninstall all unwanted software:
To uninstall software

à Settings à Control Panel à Add/Remove Programs
Select the software (one at the time) from the list and click on the Add/Remove button and follow the online screen instructions.

Erase unnecessary files in the windows temp folder.
Double Click My Computer.
Double Click the drive where windows are installed. This is typically drive C.
Double Click the windows folder. This is typically C:\Windows.
Double Click the temp folder. This is typically C:\Windows\temp.
Press control A to select all files and folders.
Press the delete key.
If confirmation is asked to delete these files choose yes to all.

Defragment hard disk.
Close all applications.
Disable your screen saver.
Disable all the programs on the taskbar if possible.
Click Start.
Click Program.
Click Accessories.
Click System Tools.
Click Defrag.
Select the drive to defrag.

You should defrag every hard disk on your system.
This process can take quite some time.
Click Ok.
Enable your screen saver.

Remove Startup programs (if you know what you are doing)
Click Start
Select Run
Type msconfig in the text box
The "System Configuration Utility" window will open

A list of programs will be shown each having a checkbox to the left of the name.
Click on the checkbox to enable the program (so it runs when windows boots) and click a second time to Uncheck the box to disable the program (so it does not run when windows boots).

Set the size of the virtual memory (swap file) to a constant optimal size.
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
The System Properties window lists the amount of RAM in your PC
Click Performance
Click Virtual Memory
Click Let me specify my own virtual memory settings
Click the arrow next to the hard disk.
Here are some guidelines to choose the best location for your virtual memory file
a) Select the quickest hard disk.
b) If you have, two hard disks that are similar in performance select the hard disk that does not contain Windows system files (usually C:).
c) Make sure the drive has free space equal to at least twice the size of the recommended swap file size.
d) If the partition is on the same physical drive, select the partition in alphabetical order. For example, if you have one 20GB hard disk and you partition it into two 10GB partitions drive C & D) You should pick Drive C over Drive D if meets all the guidelines of a, b & c.

Set the Minimum/Maximum to: With large hard disks settings at least 128mb or 256mb swap file should be sufficient in almost every situation.
Note: The amount of RAM plus the size of the virtual memory file is the maximum amount of RAM you can use at once.
Click OK.
After setting the size of the virtual memory file windows will display the following message. You have chosen not to let windows manage virtual memory automatically.
Click Yes.
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?

Click Yes

Now, antivirus program? Have you got one?

Screen very dark, can't see

Your inverter board burned out. I had the same problem. you will need it replaced. the inverter board costs less than $10 on ebay. but, you will need to completely take a part your laptop to do that. so if you are tech-savvy, then you should pursue the adventure. otherwise, you should just give it to geek squad and be ripped off.

My toshiba satellite A205-S5804 shut off after 20 minute and i upgrade my system to windows 7 but i do not know why it shut off after 20 minute?

If you leave it on without using it, it will turn off to save battery. This can be changed in Start > Control Panel > Power Options.

Otherwise, it is overheating. But this is unlikely. Try the Power Options. If you can't find it, type Power Options in Start Search box.

No sound

Your speaker wires may be disconnected from the sound board. See diagram 15 at http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-p105/take-apart-2.htm . It's pretty easy to peak into the case when the front case screws are removed.

Toshiba M45-S331, Black screen

I just went through all this myself. First I had the inverter replaced ($200) and it worked great for a week, then the screen went out again. It turned out that the LCD needed replaced ($200 more, labor comped from the first no-fix). There's a problem with the Toshiba LCDs that makes them burn out sooner than other brands. Since the replaced screen, no problems (2 months). Sucks, I know.
