Thanks for your reply. Laptop belongs to my son and he has had issues with the supplier who will no longer speak to him. I am attempting to fix the problem. I don't know how to restore factory default settings. Do I need a disc for this?

best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Hi there!! I want to know is it a hardware issue or software issue.. When I pressed that ON button, the laptop start beeping for about 1.30mins and stop. Windows will come up after about 3-4 minutes....

Sounds like you need to use your backup, OR go to Start/ Help & Support/ System Restore, and have your PC go back to maybe yesterday, or to before you know this problem started. Something you did or a program did has messed with your system enough that it sure sounds like it isn't going to keep coming on at all soon. It isn't a hardware problem probably, just your Windows system. A hardware problem usually has lots worse symptoms. Give system restore a try! It works miracles. :) Always everyone should keep a backup of their system at least once a week. I hope if System Restore doesn't fix it for you, that you have a good backup. System Restore takes lots less time than a backup, though, so try that first, please.

Completed a microsoft update and upon reboot the screen goes blank after the MicrosoftXP logo screen . I can hear the normal music etc. Screen is on not completely black. I see nothing in the F2 setup menu...

Try to load the sys in the recovery manager trough the F10 key and do a system restore to a date previous the update.
If that doesnt work than u have to load trough the safe mode trough F8 and do the sys restore.
If that doesnt work u will have to do a recovery on the sys.
Turn off the Windows update its no god use to ur sys

Use the information provided by Microsoft to help resolve this problem:

If this does not work try to run CHKDSK /R from command prompt. You can do this with Windows Recovery Disk.

Drivers for hp550

You need to download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them.

Use this link to download the drivers

Several things you can try...first, if System Restore is enabled (not recommended because viruses love to eat and grow in there), boot into Safe Mode (F8 at startup). If you can get into safe mode, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore ...the SP update automatically creates a restore point before it begins (about the only thing that Microsoft actually got right!), and you should be able to select that restore point and go back to before you ran the update.

If that does not work, or you cannot get into safe mode, then you will need to run a Windows repair using your original Windows CD or factory recovery disc(s). Make sure to run a "repair", not a "clean install", else you will lose all your data. (if you don't care about saving data, I recommend a clean install).

If the repair doesn't work, your only real choice is to do a clean install, following the steps just above. However, you will lose all your documents, so if they are important to you, take your computer to a PC service tech or facility and have them backup your files first. It'll cost you, but probably not that much. I normally charge my clients $60/hr to backup their data, and usually it only takes about 30 minutes for 1-5GB of data.

After that (or without that), run the Windows "clean" install and you're back in business!

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

Having trouble with HP ..Windows XP

I suggest that :
  1. Press F8, choose command line (if you know) and backup any file that you need (copy to an external drive, pen drive, cd or other medium). Please skip this step if you allready have updated backups.
  2. you restore the windows XP with the original cd / dvd, and choose format disk.
  3. remove the cd / dvd when asked for reboot
  4. Restore your data files and update the operation system with Microsoft update.
Hope that helps. Please inform what hp model you have for further help.

Cheers,

Pedro
