One Idea is You might have some Ram issues If you can try and boot up again and run the MEMTEST option and see what happens

I have hp compaq nx 9020 and I installed linux as my only os, but now I want to change my os to xp but bios says "no boot file name recived" how to fix this?

It seems as if you have some of your boot priorities out of skew, specifically having booting through your network connection as a higher priority. In order to fix this, you need to go into your bios settings and rearrange the boot settings so that booting from LAN is either disabled or not the top priority and making booting from CD or HDD the top priority.

What are the requirments for installing Linux System

Linux is much more HW friendly than MS Windows. There are no requirements generally. You may need the following:-
5 to 6 GB of **** space. 1 Gb of RAM should be more than enough.
May I suggest some options to you?
1. Go to www.custom.nimblex.com. Here you can customize your linux version. Ask for whatever you want from the list and you can download a .iso file which can be burnt to a bootable CD. This live CD can be inserted into any computer and boot from it in linux of your choice.
2. Go to www.knoppix.com and download the latest version of linux as a .iso file and then burn to a CD to make a live knoppix CD.
Both these options are cheap and very versatile. You can use them to boot any computer.

Have a windows xp home edition, want to install windows xp professional pc wont let me install as 2nd OS,explain please

On the same machine, Windows does not tolerate second OS. Ont the other hand you can install any number of OS' if it is a Linux machine. The trick is to install Windows first and then install Linux etc. The Linux boot manager will tolerate Windows and others and incorporate then with itself. But vice versa is not possible.

Linux 5 is not detecting my broadband modem

The connecting to internet is very easy in linux .

There are many steps but i am saying simple one

Initially configure the adsl router with ppoe over ethernet and enable dhcp address option.

Next plug the ethernet cable from router to the inteface of lan card.

Boot the redhat machine.

In the system-->Administration-->network options check whether lan card is detected and active .

If the lan card is not active activate and save

In lan card select option assign assig ip automatically

check whether ip is assigned by using command ifconfig .

My computer won't boot to second operating system.I have 2 OS and can't select the one I want to boot to. Please help..

Most OS require that as you install them you select how / where you install.

If you selected the same directory as your first installation then you will not be given an OS boot option.

For dual OS it is normal to select a second drive as the location.

If you had two OS before and they were working fine then you may have corrupted the boot loader in some way.

Knowing which two OS's you have may have been useful as Linux brings new challenges to the table.

Mother board cd

no, to format you just need OS CD, such as windows, Linux, Mac or others
motherboard CD is only contain the driver to run system of it including sound card, Video, Lan, modem, PCMCIA, or any components on your computer....
except your motherboard vendor gives you one more CD's, it called "recovery CD's".
recovery CD's is back up CD of your OS from the vendor, it including first OS, and motherboard driver also, so if you have it, you just have to boot the recovery CD,...no need to using OS CD

Boot Loder Problem when working with two operating System

best practice it when installing windows and linux install windows first and then linux. GRUB or LILO boot loader is much better then windows boot loader and very easy to reinstall. Mandriva cd should have a rescure feature that will allow you to reinstall the boot loader.

Start-up boot

What OS controls the bootloader? Is it linux or Windows? I had the same problem when i deleted ubuntu, the bootloader remains and i cannot boot windows. I then placed the windows CD and loaded recovery console. Im not sure of the command but I think it was "fixMBR" or something similar. Just type help for the commands.
