My Laptop Won't Continue Booting

Hi. I have this old laptop from my late Dad. It's IBM iSeries 1200 Model 1161-92J with 128MB RAM only. I've been using it for quite sometime but just today, when I encountered this problem. It won't continue booting. Normally, when I use this a 500GB external HDD is already connected. It takes a while to finish booting but today is not the normal day as expected. When it starts booting, there is this blue screen that says "STOP......00x..." I can't read it because it change the screen fast. It will continue to the Starting up windows with the logo then it will stop and reset again. Same thing will display the 2nd time around. Just recently, I upgraded my Avast Antivirus and everytime I connect a USB, it will detect the autorun.inf & Recyler but I just ignore it because its not a virus right? Can you please help me with this problem? As much as I want to buy a new laptop, I can't afford it right now...

    Thanks freedykru.

But I don't want to conclude that it's the hard drive that's causing the problem. I tried to reboot my laptop using a CD, format it, install OS..and it worked! I still need to observe though.. the problem might occur again..

IBM T23 wont turn on after adding new RAM

Hi - according to memory suppliers your T23 has the following memory capacity / requirements:

  • IBM ThinkPad T23 maximum RAM capacity: 1GB
  • Your IBM has Two (2) memory slots or sockets
  • Module upgrade PIN count is: 144-PIN
  • The memory speed is: SDRAM 133MHz, PC133
  • The laptop DIMM type for the ThinkPad T23 is: SODIMM, SO-DIMM, Small Outline DIMM
  • Non ECC

If you are meeting these requirements, you may have a defective module.

Also, according to Lenovo's page on the machine:

Memory
The system has 128MB or 256MB of memory standard and can be configured for up to 1GB of addressable memory. Memory options up to 512MB SDRAM SO DIMMs each can be added in the two available slots for memory expansion. The standard 128MB of memory is expandable up to 640MB and the 256MB of memory is expandable up to 768 MB of addressable memory with 64, 128, 256, or 512MB SO DIMMs without removing the 128MB SO DIMM that is standard in one of the internal slots for memory. For customers that need the maximum 1GB to which memory can be expanded, it is necessary to replace the 128MB or 256MB card with a 512MB card plus add another 512MB card in the extra slot. Only 133MHz DIMM memory can be used in this system. The use of 100MHz DIMM memory is not supported in the T23 systems.

This means yo can trouble shoot the 512MB modules individually by installing one of the original 128MB modules and one of the new 512MB modules (for a total system memory of 640MB). If it does not boot, try again with the other 512MB module. This will help you identify a defective module that may be preventing the machine from booting.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I have an older ibm thinkpad laptop, Tried to add memory, a new fan The power and fan and hard drive started , then powers down

Hi There,
Make sure all of your connections are tight, and that the RAM, HD connector, and anything else you've touched is seated correctly.
If you tried to put more RAM in than the computer will allow, it will not turn on. If you've unclipped a wire somewhere or your RAM isn't seated correctly, it will malfunction.
Check and then double check everything.

Hello,

Thanks for using fixya.

My name is Carlo.

Your computer might not pass the system requirements that's why it has an error. Or, you can try installing it one more time and check if it will work. Computers do mess up sometimes.

Here's the system requirement of SIMS 3:

Desktop PC (Windows XP + SP2):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2000+ Processor
RAM: 1 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce FX 5900 or Radeon 9500)

Desktop PC (Windows Vista + SP1):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2400+ Processor
RAM: 1.5 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce FX 5900 or Radeon 9500)

Laptop (Windows XP + SP2):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2000+ Processor
RAM: 1.5 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce Go 6200 or Radeon 9600)

Laptop (Windows Vista + SP1):
CPU: 2ghz Pentium4 Processor or Amd Athlon 2400+ Processor
RAM: 2 GB of RAM
GPU: 128mb Video Card (GeForce Go 6200 or Radeon 9600)

IF your computer does not pass the system requirement, then you cannot play sims3 in your computer.

I hope this helps. Thank you for using fixya

UPGRADING

That unit it about 10 years old.
Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade the CPU (processor)

The RAM is a standard 100MHz non-parity SDRAM SODIMM. The 2645 can use 128MB DIMMS for 160MB maximum. It has 32MB internal and two slots.

The hard drive size is limited by the BIOS. Any standard 2.5" hard drive should work, but may show as limited size, maybe 20GB.

Get a PCMCIA modem.

If you found a docking station for this unit, you'd be in better shape. Like I said, it's 10 years old. It won't be easy.
