How to back up personal stuff before a system restore?

I have a similar problem as an earlier post, as in my hp pavillion tx1000 doesn't startup; it launches a "startup repair" but then goes to a blank black screen, and then after a couple minutes, has a mouse cursor that you can move, but thats about it, it doesn't do anything else. I had contacted HP, but they said I need to do a system restore, meaning I lose all the videos and pictures and music, and programs i bought and stored on my computer! Please can anyone tell me is there ANY way at all that I can back up my personal stuff before it gets completely wiped out, or am I completely screwed?!!! UGH I HATE HP.
This is the 3rd time I have had a problem with it (2 other times got sent in to HP repair and they wiped out everything), and I am in IRAQ right now which makes trying to fix this issue that much harder.

Cant you boot up to safe mode? start your laptop, hold F8 during the start, select safe mode
If that works and you can get in you can save all things on your laptop from safe mode

Try unplugging it then plugging ,do nt work ,then reinstall.......

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand there would be a number of ways to perform a back-up. Among them are:

  • burn the "videos and pictures and music" into a DVD or multiple DVDs;
  • get an external storage device and copy/paste. This could be as simple as a large sized flash/thumb drive or a full pledge Hard Disk with IDE/SATA adapter to USB.

    Of course, this would require that the hard drive of the HP Pavillion TX1000 be removed, connected to a 2.5 HD to USB interface and connected to a 2nd PC that would do the backup or copying.

Hp compaq laptop how to restore to factory default?


Go to Start/All Programs/HP Tools/HP PC System Recovery

If this doesn't work then try pressing the F10 key multiple times during the bootup to access the recovery console.

If this still doesn't get things fixed then you need to re-install XP

What are the Troubleshooting steps you have tried?

Have you tried Microsoft website?

Do you have the Blinking Cursor?

Access the link below and try to perform a starup repair, as it might help us to fix the issue.

If the issue persists after performing the startup repair, try to perform a system restore.
1. Insert the installation disc.
Note The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a DVD, see the information that came with the computer.
2. Restart the computer. To do this, click Start , click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart .
Note If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on.
3. Set your language preference, and then click Next .
Note In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options menu, click System Restore.
7. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
8. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

Is heatsink connected to this problem? (sic) Most probably not, it is more than likely a simple Driver problem. Try to startup in SAFE MODE, press F8 at boot time. If this works you could run a "System Restore" back to a time before it went faulty. Or troubleshoot from safe desktop.

Hp Laptop Wont Boot


Hey dear,


Your operating system got crash. Use backup CD.
Turn on yr lappy. manually open the cd rom from right side of leptop. Put CD in. then wait for few seconds. u will see the screen then follow the instruction and re install the entire windows.
