Question about Dell 962 Photo All-In-One InkJet Printer

Dell 962 Every time I install a new black cartridge in my Dell 962 printer, I get a "right cartridge incorrect" message and can't print color. Dell sent another printer once (same problem occurs with it) then new color cartridges til warantee expired. Surely Scott and I aren't only ones experiencing this! Dell won't respond to requests now.

    I purchased both black and color cartidges from Dell online, when I installed them I got a message saying cartridge 1203 and right cartridge missing. I never had this problem before replacing ink cartridges. I have cleaned the heads and reinstalled software, unplugged and reset, nothing works. Shirley

    I bought this dell printer a few years back and dont even use often. This is the second time i have the error incorrect right cartridge when it is the correct one and worked fine until now. Dell is very hard to get answers from when you are out of their warranty. Im considering just getting a new non dell printer. This is messed up. Maybe this is some kind of scheme to make us buy more ink cartridges before they even get empty.

    This complete bull, I get the right cartridge missing error too. printer has been with us for about a year or so now and it never acted up like this. I'm positive our warranty is out and as i have read I'm not about to go n call em to get hung up on. Furthermore we have decided just to buy a new printer as we don't have the time for this garbage lol good luck.

Just found this partial fix: "Try removing the color cartridge and try printing with the color cartridge out. If it gives you a message that the cartridge is missing, it will still allow you to print by clicking "continue". And from there, it will allow you to print black. I think it really is a problem with your color cartridge." From searching the net, this seems to be a major problem with no solution from Dell!

EVERY color cartridge Dell sells is the problem?!?!? I don't think so! It's a scam. Boycott Dell!!!!!

I removed the colour cartridge which was causing the error 'right cartridge incorrect' and it then allowed me to print in black ink - I think ruiman must be right - it's problem with the colour cartridge not the printer. My printer is the 922 though, not 962.

Please check if the cartridge is not dried out.

It will get dried out if you have not used that cartridge for certain period of time.

Try to replace the color Cartridge.

Black cartridge is new. registers low ink level and does not print at all.


Unplug the printer from the wall. Noe remove the power brick from the printer for 60 seconds. This will reset any error message the printer is getting. Plug the printer back in.

Turn on the printer. Open up the printer and take out the black cartridge and reseat it. Do the same for the color cartridge. Now close the printer and it will print an alignment page. Any error messages?

If you still get the error message, then it's possible that the sensor in the Dell Series 5 ink cartridge is bad. If this is a new Dell Series 5 ink cartridge, then take it back to the place of purchase for a replacement or refund.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

I intalled new ink on my computer and it says to remove tape from cartridge when I all ready did and it will not work

How do I install the printer cartrige? I do not have the booklet...


  1. Turn on your printer.

  2. Open the front cover.

The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.

  1. Press the tabs on the cartridge lids, then lift the lids.

  1. Remove the old ink cartridges.

  1. Store the cartridges in an air-tight container or dispose of them properly.

  2. If you are installing new ink cartridges, remove the sticker and transparent tape from the back and bottom of each ink cartridge.


NOTE: You can use your printer with one cartridge (color or black) at a time. To extend the life of your color cartridge and improve printing speed, install both a color cartridge and a black cartridge at the same time.
  1. Insert the new ink cartridges. Make sure the color ink cartridge is secure in the left ink cartridge carrier and the black ink cartridge is secure in the right ink cartridge carrier.

  1. Snap each lid closed.

  1. Close the front cover. The front cover must be closed to start a print job.

  1. Open the Dell Printer Solution Center by clicking Start® Programs or All Programs® Dell Printers® Dell Photo Printer 720® Dell Printer Solution Center.

  2. Click the Maintenance tab.

  3. Click Install a new print cartridge.

  4. Click Next.

  5. Select the type of cartridge you installed.

NOTE: Specify whether the cartridge is a new cartridge or an old cartridge (one that has been used before). If an old cartridge is incorrectly identified as New Cartridge in the Dell Printer Solution Center, ink levels may be incorrect.
  1. Click Next.

Can you copy a document, when you put it under the glass? B&W and color?

If so, then it is a driver issue. Try reinstalling the printer by following the instructions located at...

My Dell AIO printer keeps blinking right ink cartridge incorrect.Exclamation light keeps blinking too.


Try going to the Dell site and searching for that printer model. Then see if you need to have both ink cartridges populated and filled with ink, to make it work.

You might also clean the contacts on the ink cartridges, to make sure the printer knows you have both cartridges in the printer, even though they're not both filled with ink.

It just might require both to be filled, before it will print for you.

See what Dell says.

Make sure the contacts on the cartridge and in the printer are clean. Also, try a new cartridge to see whether or not you have a defective one.

Hi,
The error you are referring to could be related to either the cartridge or the printer, so please perform the steps below to check if the issue lies in the printer or the cartridge.
Power on the printer and open the top cove, the cartridges will align in the middle of the printer, remove both the cartridges form their slots and interchange them, yes put the Black cartridge in the Blue slot and the Color cartridge in the Black slot, then close the top cover of the printer and power off the printer and restart it, at this point of time check if the error message is changed or not if the error message is not changed and till showing the same as “Right cartridge is incorrect” then you can try to update the printer firmware form the Dell support site, here is how you can do it.
  1. Go to www.support.dell.com.
  2. Click on Drivers & Downloads.
  3. Under Option 2: Select a Product as printers.
  4. Locate the printer(s) 962 printer and click Go.
  5. Select an Operating System that is installed in your computer then choose downloads and look for Firmware.
  6. Download and install the firmware, then restart the computer and the printer, however please make sure that you do not restart your computer and the printer when the download and the installation is in progress.
If the issue is still not fixed after you upgraded the firmware then I believe that you will have to replace it. However if the error message changes to Left cartridge incorrect after you have interchanged the cartridges earlier then try these steps below.
  1. Remove the color cartridge and clean the metal contacts of the cartridge with a dry cloth thoroughly please make sure that you are using a soft dry cloth to clean the metal contacts of the cartridge.
  2. Make sure that the cartridge holder snap which sits on the top of the cartridge is fixed firmly.
  3. Make sure that you are using a Dell branded cartridge and it is not a refilled one cause Dell printers often give error message when you use a refilled cartridge or a cartridge of some other brand.
  4. If the issue is still not resolved replace the color cartridge.
