Question about Canon PowerShot A540 Digital Camera

Canon Powershot A540 Digital Camera

I've only had my camera for three months. I had no problem with it initially. Now as soon as I put new batteries in it keeps telling me to 'change the batteries' and flashes red. This has happened with three sets of batteries and the last rechargeables I put in, it only allowed me to take one photo before it started flashing red. I'm at a loss as to what to do, any help would be appreciated.

Batteries do not last over one or two photos.

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2007

After taking a few photos (or even one sometimes) my camera either shuts off or tells me I need new batteries. I HAVE new batteries (good photo batteries). If I open the door with the batteries and dump out into my hand and then right back in a shut the little door it will work for a few more photos. I'm frustrated as I continue to miss photo opps over and over due to this camera acting up. Do I take it to be looked at? Could it be memory card problem vs batteries? HELP~

Konw this is an old post but this may help others with this problem. Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Says sd card error

Are you sure it's an SD card? Even though SDHC cards will also fit into the slot, they will not work in the A540. If the card is larger than 2GB then it will not work.

I´ve got the same issue. If you use the batteries that were in A540 in another camera, does it still work?

Replace battery sign in New canon A590si camera.

You're using the wrong batteries. You need to purchase lithium batteries. They are quality batteries for high powered, battery operated electronics. Personally, I have a battery charger and use rechargable duracell batteries. (HR6/ DC1500/ NiMH/ 1,2V) Gives you approximately 16 hrs before having to recharge.

Shows low battery after putting in new batteries

Your best solution is to use Sanyo Eneloop batteries because of their higher voltage over the discharge curve compared to regular NiMH batteries. See http://www.epinions.com/content_309637189252.
I have gotten a full week of use with hundred of pictures on one charge using a Canon A540 and a set of Eneloops. The only problem is they are hard to find, but you can get them on Amazon.com.
