The bottom third of the picture is black

check to see that mirror goes all the way up

check to make sure secondary mirror attached to bottom of main mirror goes all the way up when mirror goes up

check to make sure a shutter blade is out of place or broken

for all of these set the camera on manual and bulb, and set it to fire without a card, and then take off the lens and look in the mirror box when firing

I have a Minolta StSi camera. The viewfinder is stuck in the panoramic mode -- it won't go back to standard. The side switch is in STD. Please help! I LOVE this camera!

The linkage may have broken. place the camera on a towel, on a flat, well lit surface. Put the camera on its back. Push the button alongside the lens and turn the lens counterclockwise. Remove the lens and set it aside.look inside the camera mirror area. You will see two flaps that are up against the roof of the mirror area. these flaps block off part of the image giving you panorama.
You may be able to open these flaps by yourself. I suggest nothing stronger than a wooden toothpick. The plastic screen they rest on is very sensitive to scratching.
You can also GENTLY lift the mirror and see if there are similar flaps in front of the film shutter. Move your lever/ side switch to see if the flaps move. I do not suggest trying to move the flaps by the shutter. The shutter is very fragile. One slip and you ruined the camera. Have it repaired by a camera repair shop. Or get yourself another on Ebay. Get a repair estimate before you leave the camera with them. Another STsi body on Ebay may be cheaper.
BTW you can make panorama shots the same way the camera does by cropping your prints. Consider the other cameras in that series HTsi and XTsi as well. The QTsi is very basic but the others offer more features.

I see two small black spots on the viewer and then on the image when I upload to computer. Not on the exterior surface of the lens as I tried cleaning with damp q tip with no results. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have some foreign objects on the inside portion of the lens or the actual mirror...since you have already tried cleaning the exterior of the lens, I suggest taking it to a qualified camera repair shop....or, if it is still under warranty, take to the store where it was purchased...

Can't see through viewfinder (it's all black) and cannot trip shutter or advance film. batteries are new and intact.

Remove the lens and look inside it. Do you see the mirror? If not, your mirror is stuck in the up position. Its flat up against the focusing screen. If the mirror is down, the problem is in the lens, or you still have the lens cap in place.
Check your manual under troubleshooting.
Try setting the shutter speed dial to the M90 position.
Also be sure the batteries are inserted correctly!!!!

If no change yet, you can try to put the mirror back down yourself. With the lens removed, set the camera on its back. You can use your fingers, but I suggest a toothpick cuz they won't leave fingerprints on the mirror and the toothpick should break before you exert enough pressure to really break something. So just try to return the mirror to the 45 degree angle within the mirror box. Be careful not to damage anything in there, like the shutter or the arms that raise and lower the mirror. Depending on where you live, there may be some corrosion or rust on the mirror linkage. It should move easily. If you feel any roughness when you move the miror, that may be the reason it did not return on its own. Then turn it on, off again. At some point, you may want to have this camera cleaned, lubricated and Adjusted(CLA) - after all, its over 25 yrs old.
If all that did not work, you'll need to send it in. Here are some good choices for repair places...
Garry Airapetov in Niles, ILL
Camera Repairs in Avon, IN.
BTW here's a website with several pages about FG...http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/emfgfg20/fg/index.htm
copy and paste it into your browser.

Wont take a picture displays error 99

Other than sending the camera to the shop to get replacement, you can do this method to temporarily solve the problem. Set the camera to P mode, go for Sensor Cleaning Mode, Manual Cleaning, and clean now... You will then hear the mirror lock and followed by ERR99! All you have to do now is to shut off the camera, take off the battery and waith few seconds. Reinstal the battery and immediately you'll hear the mirror resetting itself. The camera should be working just fine for now until you shut it off next. I suspect, this error are linked to the mirror or sensor lock up thingy....

Viewfinder Blank

This suggests the mirror is stuck up in the take position. Remove the Lens and look at what is behind it In the rest mode you should see a mirror. If it is stuck up you would see the sensor window Which do you see. with the lens off - can the camera be switched on? This might just drop the mirror The mirror is surface silvered - do not touch it. If it still up then it is a repair shop/warranty replacement job.
