If it is a hard drive...the drive could be/have:
data or power cable may not be seated properly or failing
the jumper may not be set correctly
not initialized yet
not formatted yet
or could be failing itself

if it is a cd/dvd drive.. the drive could be/have
data or power cable may not be seated properly or failing
the jumper may not be set correctly
the disk may not be in a suppoted format (ex. using a dvd in cd rom drive)
the disk may be scratched or damaged
the lens may be dirty or not properly aligned
firmware maybe outdated.

if drive is a removable drive/flash drive the drive may be:
not powered
data cable not connected/failing
the usb/firewire port may be failing.
not initialized
not formatted
failing in itself.

I have a dell 755 that the CD drive won't play certain CD's. It is not the CD because it plays on other machines. Some CD's will play just fine. Get's the error message Unable to Access Drive D tr

it depends on the files on the cd ...they might require a certain software to be installed in order to be read..for example the player may not be able to read mp4 without a codec installed ..or vcd (video cd ) to need a dvd player installed or a player that supports video cd and dvd-es..Same way for other file types...or ...certain speeds being imposed on writing ..and your cd drive to be unable to read them on those speeds..

Unable to do install of XP. during install process pc reports unable to copy various .dll's and other files from install disk. install disk is in perfect condition.

The message refers to the CD/DVD drive being unable to read from the CD itself. That could mean that either the disk is in bad condition and cannot be read (i.e. scratches, old disk, etc) OR that the drive has difficulty reading from the disk.
In the later case, it's the drive's fault and not the disk's (since you mention it's in perfect condition).
You could try cleaning up the drive but it's usually not worth it and since they're quite cheap, I would recommend getting a new DVD drive instead.
Hope that helps!

Since the disk works "elsewhere", it's probably your CD-drive that is faulty. Spend $40 to replace it with a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer.

The only other possibility is "bad" RAM on your computer's motherboard -- but you would be seeing other symptoms when using your computer, if this was a problem.

Take a can of air and blow some into the drive. This will make sure that no dust or dirt is interfering on the laser.

If after you do this the drive is still acting up, then that means the drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

Good morning! please try to check from the Device Manager if your CD drive is enabled & working properly, if not we have to reinstall the driver, then after reinstalling the driver if still it doesn't read the inserted CD, then try to install a new CD Drive unit -if it works then the previous CD drive unit is defective. best regards

If it shows up in windows explorer as a drive, right click it and choose format and choose ntfs as the file format.

Do you know what format it is when you use linux? I dont think you can use a dos command to format an ntfs volume. Your message probably means it cant read FAT or FAT32 because it probably already is NTFS file format.
