Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

My laptop has 256K memory installed. I purchased 512 RAM (max I can add is 1024) and installed it in my hp Pavilion zt1230 laptop. Per Kahlon.com instructions, I cleaned gold leads with eraser and popped it into place. I turned computer on and computer will not start up. It is dead until I pull memory out. This is the 2nd time and 2nd different memory chip in tried. I verified with Kahlon.com that this is correct chip. Even though I have lifetime warranty and they guarantee compatibility, Kahlon.com told me to sell chip on Ebay. Any suggestions why this is not working in my laptop? I have the latest BIOS. Helen

    No, I did not remove the 256 chip. It is factory installed and I do not want to or think I should take the computer apart. That is out of my league. I went to several sites and saw how to install the add'l 512 memory and physically installing it is easy. As far as it being a high or low density, I was not aware of this. The company I purchased the memory from told me it would be compatible with my computer. Per my invoice, SDRAM SODIMM, 3.3 Volts Proprietary Design, 512 MB, PC133, Unbuffered, non-ECC. Any other ideas? Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

Is it a High Density memory? There are two different types of memory, High and Low. Low density is the universal but High density, may be cheaper but the motherboard needs to be compatible with High density memory. Although your memory fits in the slot, I think you have High density memory hence why it won't boot up and does when you remove the memory.

I have a HP a1514n media system with 2 - 512 sticks of ram. I replaced one of the 512's with a 1GB stick and my system only shows 1024 ram available. I checked the settings in startup and it shows...

First of all, make sure you have the right memory - 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 MB/sec.

Your machine should support the memory as it has two banks of 1. Sometimes it is simply a sequence problem. In older machines with mixed memory, I always put the largest and fastest in the first slot. You might try just reversing the memory.

I want to upgrade my memory on my Pavilion 513n,

FixYa is a product support website, and as such we do not delve into manufacturing. No we cannot supply ram memory.

I can supply you with the solution to your questions, however.

This is HP Support, and the main page for the Pavilion 513n Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90384&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us

If you click on > Product information > Product specifications > HP Pavilion 513n Desktop PC Product Specifications,
you can view,

A) What type of ram memory the computer uses,
B) How much is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer,
C) How much is the Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot,
D) How many ram slots

Look under the Memory heading.
A) What type of ram memory
Type - DDR
It's DDR Sdram

Speed - PC1600/PC2100
Tells you either PC1600 can be used, or PC2100.

PC1600 is DDR Sdram that operates at 200MHz.
PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266MHz.

{To expound:
Ram memory operates at a Frequency Rate. Slang for frequency rate is 'Speed'.
Mega = approximately 1 Million
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second
Example: PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266 Million Cycles per Second }

B) What is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer. (Motherboard)
According to HP it is 1GB.

{Maximum - 1GB (2 X 512) HP recommended maximum}

I believe this to be wrong. The Total Maximum Amount is 2GB.
1GB per ram slot.

I base this upon using the memory configurator's of several websites, that sell ram memory for the Pavilion 513n desktop computer, and looking at what the motherboard chipset for the Pavilion 513n will support.

The motherboard chipset is the Intel 845GL.
This chart found on Wikipedia, states what the Intel 845GL chipset will support,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

As you can see reading across from the 845GL subheading, and looking under > Max.memory, 2GB is listed.

Sources for online memory configurators,
1) Crucial.com
2) Tigerdirect.com
3) Newegg.com
4) Memory4less.net

In this case,
C) Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot is 1GB.

D) There are Two ram slots. {Proper speak for ram Slot is ram Bank}

Kingston is a good brand for economical ram memory.
So is Ultra.

An easy way to find out what type of ram memory you need, and how much is the Maximum Total Amount, as well as the Maximum Amount for Each ram slot, is to use an automatic scanner from a website that sells ram memory.

The above four websites listed, are but a small handful of the total websites online that offer an automatic scan.
Let's use Crucial.com for an example.

On the main page,

http://www.crucial.com/

,you will see - Scan My System, in blue.
Simply click on it to run an automatic scan of your computers hardware.
Doesn't look at your personal effects, just the hardware of your computer.

After the scan is done, you will be presented with the ram memory info you need.
Several options of ram memory are presented for you to choose from.

I have 4 banks of ram slots. Can I keep the Bank1 256k Bank2 256k. Can I put 1G into bank3.

It is strongly recommended that you install RAM in matched pairs. So if you add a 1GB module in bank 3 then you should add 1GB in bank 4
But you can add just the one module and it should work, but not at optimal speed.

Help my pc is not detecting the correct amount of ram installed

Okay, first things first. IF the memory you installed is 1024 and you are using the on board video and it is 512 MB, you will only have 512 MB usable memory. This is because the on board video uses the installed memory to function. What ever the video memory is, subtract that form the total memory. If this is not the case, try re-seating the memory. If the numbers still do not add up then if there are four memory slots, make sure the memory is installed in the same color slots. Most desktops with 4 memory slots have two slots one color and the other two another color. Make sure both memory sticks are installed in the same color.

Sdram capacity

its that 512 mb total capacity for your computer memory?? if so read this:
To find the total amount of RAM that can be added , subtract the amount of RAM currently in the computer from the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold. For example, a computer has 256 MB of RAM. If the maximum amount of memory the computer can hold is 512 MB, then 256 MB is the amount of RAM that can be added. this info from the HP website , to find out more , go to http://www.hp.com/support , enter the model number , and look for more information about your computer specs, hope this helps , please rate & thanks AJ

I have an hp pavilion ze4430us laptop. I am wanting to know how much memory that it will support. I am wanting to upgrade from 512 to as much as it will support.

hi,
The max memory supported by your computer is 1024 mb..
(1GB).
You can verify it here in this link
Also when you do this the already existing 512 MB may be gone without any use if they had provided you as 256+256 in seperate slots
