Question about Simplicity Serge Pro SW432 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

Simplicity Serge Pro SW432......how to gather?

I have a serge pro SW432.
I would like to sew two pieces of fabric together, and gather the lower piece. (Ideally, I would like the lower piece to end up being half the length it originally was).
I set the differential feed dial to 2 (as explained in the manual) and have tried various stitch lengths, but I only ever get a very small gather on the lower piece of fabric.....hardly anything at all.
What should I set the dials to for gathering? Any help would be much appreciated!

So you are sewing two rows of straight stitch at 10mm and 20mm from fabric edge with a stitch length of 4? Are you using good quality thread? I like Molynecke, Guttermann or Sylko Supreme.

Try loosening the top and bottom tension too, and use a gathering foot if you have one.

A quick solution is to zig-zag over a length of pearl cotton or similar heavy weight string/thread, this works well for large volumes of gathers such as around a bed valance frill.

For large volume gathering like cushions and bed frills, I use a pleater/ruffler attachment, however, this has only 3 settings so isn't a variable gathering effect.

What are the proper settings for a serge pro

I have a Simplicity Pro model SW432.  The sewing sample that came with it had the following tension settings: Red 3.2 yellow 2 green 3.5 blue 2 The book gives illustrations about the different problems you might have.  Changing a tension a little and trying it for the partic. fabric you are using, is usually what a person ends up doing.
