"Battery critical low going into hibernation mode.Before I can get to the control panel to check power it shuts down. Unit couple years old, very little use on battery mostly run in direct current mode

It sounds like your backlight is damaged.
On some units this can be replaced on its own. On others, it requires the entire LCD to be replaced.
I'll see if I can find out which this is, in your case, and find you a part number.
Take a look on the computers that need the most repair problems solved.. THEN Don't buy it... Most computer or laptops are disposible now. If you want something that lasts buy a Sony. I sold mine after it got soaked for 35% of what I paid for it.

Ok, this isn't so tricky, I have an aspire one, and had to sit down and mess around for a bit, butit was right under my nose, your webcam is activated by clicking on the icon in the "My computer" window, it'll be at the bottom of the list of drives and things.
