WHIRLPOOL SUPER CAPACITY 465 MODEL: SF368LEPQ GAS SMELL

MY WHIRLPOOL OVEN SMELLS GAS WHEN I USE THE BROIL OR BAKE.
THE SMELL IS SO STRONG THAT WE HAVE TO OPEN WINDOWS TO LET THE GAS GO OUT.
ANYBODY HAS HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL BEFORE OR ANY SUGGESTION ON RESOLVING IT WILL BE VERY MUSH APPRECIATED.
THANKS

We have the same thing. Each time to tech comes out he notices that the igniter (I like to call it the "glowie thing") is weak and replaces it. A year or two later - the same thing starts to happen. So the gas valve opens before the glowie thing gets hot enough to ignite the gas...you say WHAT!?!?!

The troubling part is this: if the igniter is not glowing hot enough to ignite the gas, yet the gas valve opens (thinking the igniter is hot enough), then gas is released with little chance of being ignited. By the time the igniter is hot enough, the initial gas is long gone and stinking up your house.

The good news is that the situation never seems to get bad enough to blow up the oven or the house.

I'm convinced Whirlpool has an engineering defect in this 20+ year old systems. The signal to open the valve is based on the electrical current through the igniter, not by the igniter temperature. The current is supposed to be an indicator of the temperature but it varies as the igniter ages.

Your options? Keep having tech replace the igniter or buy a different oven. As an experienced Electrical Engineer, even I won't mess with this system. I keep paying the tech.

    Thanks.

Well, had the igniter replaced yesterday. Gas smell when turning on oven is just as bad today. So much for my pattern. Didn't fail for the tech. Did fail this morning when the oven was really cold. Hmmm.

There is no gas leak. That was checked. Sounds like the last thing to replace is the gas valve. Is a malfunctioning gas valve a common occurance with this system? A brief seach on this site shows many people with similar problems with the Whirlpool system but I see very few concrete answers. Not meant as a ctiticism to the many experts here.

It's seems so odd that a gas valve would be engineered in a way to fail in a manner to emit gas too early.

I'm ready to (turn off the gas), yank this thing out and throw it off the back deck. Somone out there really knows the fundamental problem with this system. Help me!!!!

I will rarely say "call a professional" here because this is a do it yourself site right?

However, in this case, you obviously have a gas leak and/or malfunctioning gas valve.

Unless you have experience and training in detecting gas leaks I highly recommend shutting the gas off to the unit, ventilating the area, and calling a pro.

Gas can be very dangerous if handled improperly and a mere spark can "make house go kaboom".

If you are smelling it strong enough that you have to open windows, it is a potentially dangerous situation.

OVEN TURNING OFF BY ITSELF. I THINK THE CODE ON IT IS SAYING F2

Hi!
The F2 code means Oven Temperature Too High. When this code is present do the following:
1. Look for welded relay contacts on bake or broil relays. If this happens, replace oven control (also called clock or ERC).

2. For SELF CLEAN models: check door lock operation.
3. Look for a high resistance connection or any other cause of high resistance in the oven temperature sensor circuit. Check sensor, sensor harness and sensor harness connection at sensor and oven control. Replace sensor if found defective.

Remember: Oven control (ERC) measures resistance of sensor circuit, not actual oven temperature.

A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

The oven will not light on my Whirlpool gas oven Mod SF368LEPQ 2. The stove top burners still light.

Sounds like you need an bake element ignitor if the bake doesn't work but if the broil also doesn't work, it could be the electronic clock/timer control. the part number for the bake ignitor is 8054129 .Best off to call a reliable service company such as Sears.

Whirlpool Accubake Super Capacity 465 gas range. Oven won't light

Some gas ranges may take 10 or so minutes to light.
Other than that you may have a defective glow bar ignitor.
If it glows and does not light the reistance in the ignitior has failed.

In an attempt to self clean my oven, I pushed the auto clean button and then pressed start. Instead, nothing happened, but now have a message on the panel reading E1on the left side of panel and -F5- on the right side of panel. I am unable to clear it or operate the oven now.
