Just installed a new memory card and camera won't operate, saying "memory card error", and card is locked. How do I unlock?
What type and size memory card? The A430 works with SD cards. It won't work with SDHC cards.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
16GB or 16MB? If it's 16GB then it's an SDHC card and shouldn't have worked at all.
If the card's been in the camera the whole time then that might be the problem. Has it been formatted recently?
There's a "Format" command in the camera's setup menu. Memory cards should be formatted each time you finish download pictures.
Formatting a card erases all information on the card, so make sure the download completed successfully before formatting the card.

Hi everyone,
Here's the solution, I just had the same problem LOL!
1. take the memory card out
2.On the memory card there is a little switch (it will be the little tiny piece on the side of the card thats a different color) slide it up.
That's it!

I had the same problem - just put the lock button of the card to the lock position and than again to the unlock position

Take the card out. On the left side of the card is a tiny white switch. Reverse the position.

There is a tiny button on the side of the card - so small you can hardly see it. Just slide it up and voila All is solved.
It is frustrating as there is nothing in the manual bout this and the onl line assistance wants to charge for 20 seconds advice Mine is free dorothy

First I know you've said you've checked the card's slide switch, but just want to restate this first for others with the same problem who may not know of this switch.
Check to make sure that you didn't accidentally place the tiny locking slide switch on the side of your SD card in the "locked" downward position. The correct "unlocked" position should be slid up toward the direction of the connectors.
If you've tried this, and it's still showing locked, it's likely that the locking switch inside the camera's card slot is stuck. If you look inside the slot on the side of the slot where the SD card slide switch would be, you'll see a glint of gold color on the side. This is the camera's lock/unlock switch. The other glint's of gold that you may see at the far end of the slot are the reader's connectors (ignore those).
Somehow, the locking switch is making contact and has become stuck in the locked position (a single grain of sand can jam it there). With a plastic toothpick, or other skinny NON-METALLIC item, tap and gently push against this switch to see if you can jar open the contact to its normal unlocked position. Also try blowing compressed air at it, to clear out any gunk that may have worked its way in there, jamming it closed. Occasionally, reinsert the SD card to see if the issue has been corrected.
If repeated tries fail, it may be time to consider opening the camera to force open this switch (not recommended unless you have some familiarity with electronics). In this case please see the following (xscrewdriver, hope you don't mind me referencing your blog):

I have tried moving the the switch on the side in both directions, makes no difference, the disk is a SanDisk ultra 16GB, and has been in the camera since I bought it, (I don't Take many photos!) I bought a new disc, and your right, that one is a SDHC, and probably explains why that doesn't work, but why would another card stop working? I found some other info on the web, it said to look into the card slot, and see if there are any pieces if metal or spring sticking out as this will make the camera register as an error, it said carefully bend these wires down flat, and the camera should be fine. That didn't work either. Im ready to throw it in the bin! unless you can help. TA! Bronwyn.
I've tried doing everything suggested, the same messages keep coming up. We recently bought a new computer, and I have been downloading photos from the card, directly to the computer so I could e-mail photos. It was working fine for several weeks, then suddenly after removing the card from the computer, and inserting it into the camera, it came up as locked, before this i used to take the card and print in store. Do you think the problem is in the card, the camera or the computer (or me!) I don't know anything about formatting, Im a beginner when it comes to computers!
