Question about Canon PowerShot A70 Digital Camera

Canon A70 stays in replay mode

On turn on lens now doesn't move. always stays in replay mode regardless of switch position. tried a spare rear switch pcb and rear cover - same problem. Helppppppp! any actual repair advice (inlc. diagrams if available) will be very appreciated. I'm quite technical-wise. Thanks for your consideration, Gerry.

Thanks a lot Joe - I gently flicked the the little white flex pcb mode "switch" "lug" and it came out to it's normal perpendicular position. Reassembled and all working again! This may help others too. Thanks for your very helpful and clearly knowledgable input. Regards, Gerry.

Gerry, The mode switch is a very common problem that causes the camera to remain in either play or camera mode. The stem breaks off the top of the switch and no longer functions. If this is not the case, the flex harness (operations unit) can get torn on top if the camera has been dropped. If the switch appears to be good, check for ground switching between the two outer legs of the switch, the micro gets a low signal from the mode switch to determine what state the cameras in. Good luck, this is a nice camera! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectroncis.org)

Power Shot A70 will snap pictures but there are no images in the monitor and replaying mode shows only red light image taken. I am still able to view past images taken but can no longer see or take...

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

My canon 20D autofocus doesn't work... can you tell me haw to do?? thanks..

Make sure your camera is set to Auto mode (top left knob). Check your lens and make sure it is switched to "auto" and not "manual"(sliding switch near base of lens). Make sure your lens can rotate and move without being obstructed. Clean the lens contact by removing the lens and use 99% alcohol or lens cleaner sparingly to clean off the metal contacts.
You can also check your viewfinder focus, it has a small dial upper right, that you can fine tune to focus to your own eyesight. If it is way off, your view will always appear to be out of focus.
Hope that helps.

I TURN ON MY A70 AND I GET A VIEW OF THE LAST PICTURE I TO TOOK.

The camera is stuck in picture review mode. Try sliding the mode switch back and forth a couple times, and leave it in camera mode to see if this corrects the problem.

When I turn on my PowerShot A70, it comes on and immediately shuts itself off and the Error E18 appears on the screen.

Canon Powershot's error E18 has to do with the lens:
If it appears on a black LCD with E18 written on the corner, it is mostly due to the lens getting stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
I am giving below a link which will help you with E18 problem.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have a proble.
Please do rate and thanks for using FixYa and Best fo luck to get you camera out of E18!

First make sure that your lens is clean. Turn the camera on and look for fingerprints on the lens. If so, clean the lens with soft tissue. But if the lens is clean, then this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Can't take a picture or even see an image in picture mode. I get an error message E18? I am able to look at photos taken in the past.

SkiPowder, the E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. Have already fixed several cameras with this problem by using these methods:
