I have never used the Photo ink Cartridge #58. It intal pic shows putting it where the black one goes-does this mean I would use the color and the photo one at the same time instead of the black one?

Yes correct. The photo cartridge has to be inserted, where you install black cartridge. The photo cartridge gives finishing touch to the photos which you print. The actual photo comes from the color cartridge only, but for lightness and darkness, the color(ink) from photo cartridge gets used.In photo cartridge there are three color ink, that are light pink, light blue and grayish black. In color cartridge there are three color ink, that are pink(magenta), yellow and cyan( blue).------------- This are the details.Thank you for using fixya.

I am getting the following error message: Black/photo cartridge missing

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge.

Close the printer. It should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Black cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

If these ink cartridges are new, then take them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacements. If they're old, then try purchasing a new Dell Series 5 ink cartridge.

When I am printing photos, there are color lines horizontally across the photos?

Have you tried the "clean cartridges" button in the Printer Htoolbox? Also, does your color cartridge have ink? If the "clean cartridge" option doesn't work, take the cartridge out of the printer, put a small amount of hot water on the paper towel and push the paper towel up against the cartridge ink jets. This often opens up blocked ink jet ports. Dry the cartridge with a dry paper towel and put it back in and give it a try. You don't need a lot of water, just enough to get the ink flowing. Hopefully this will help. Good luck!

Photo ink

Remove the tab from your photo cartridge. Power the printer. Open the printer cover and the cartridges should move to be accessible. Remove the color cartridge: move it gently toward you and remove. Insert the photo cartridge. Close the printer cover.

Won't print with just black ink cartridge

When you print, in the printing window, click properties, then click advanced. Most times you can select to print using black cartridge only. Unfortunately you will need to replace to get the printer working. If you need further assistance let me know.
Thank you,

When I want to print using the photo or black ink cartridges, my printer uses the tricolour cartridge. If I take the tri colour cartridge out, the printer alerts that there is a cartridge missing and still...

If what you are trying to print is a black in white image then you cant print that when you dont have the other colors installed. The reason is because your image/photo has shades of gray, and for the printer to produce gray, it needs the other colors as well. It needs colors to get the light black or gray shades of the photo....

If however, you are trying to print text only, the printer should be using the black cartridge and not the other colors... I believe that there should be an option in the printers preferences to select black ink only... look for it under advance tab...

hope this helps

Ink cartridge

Maybe you've already tried this, but here's the instructions from the HP website, with pictures.

It sounds like you removed the plastic object and protective tape, but can't get the cartridge to sanp in place. Be careful not to touch the the corner where the tape had been. Slide the cartridge at a "Slight upward angle" to get the leading bottom edge in.

Hope this helps,

Photo ink 58 do i put it on the right side and what other ink cartridge do i need to use

Normally, you keep the regular tri-color cartridge in the place it already was.. You should be taking the black cartridge OUT and putting the 58 Photo cartridge in...

FYI.. the 58 photo cartridge provides you with LIGHT magenta, LIGHT Cyan and a PHOTO Black -- which are supposed to give you truer tones and 'half-tones' for shades and nuances in color (like different grades of blue in the sky). The Photo black helps the photo not look "green" on black areas when there is a reflection on the photo... (with regular ink, when you get a reflection off of the shiny paper you often see a green-ish like color and it looks rather odd... the photo black stops that.)
