Problems with MS Office XP CD

My husband bought a MS Office XP CD when he was a professor. He is now retired. The CD is no longer working. Is there anyway I can get a replacement CD. Microsoft does not recognize the code because it was a CD from a university.

It is the MS Office disk (2002). XP is working just fine.

He purchased it from the university and it has a university code which Microsoft does not recognize.

The CD is damaged beyond repair (it has a crack in it).

Basically I just want to know if it is possible to get a replacement disk from somewhere. The computer recognizes the code with no problem. It is just Microsoft who does not recognize it. At the moment the Office is working just fine but obviously if there is a problem in the future or it wants to load something new I will have problems.

I am not in the US at the moment (I'm in the UK) and could not find anybody helpful at Microsoft here. Does anybody know where I can download a copy. I only need it for back-up because as I said the programme is working fine at the moment.

    Hi Jane,

    A couple questions,

    1. MS-Office or XP (Operating System) ?

    2. Did he buy it from a retailer or the institution where he was working?

    3. When you say 'The CD is no longer working', can you clarify? Is it unreadable? Refuses to install?
Please provide details so we can better solve your problem.

    Thank you

Hi Jane,

Thanks for clarifying my concerns. When in doubt, ask. You answered, now it's my turn.

I have the answers you need. Any replacement of this type is done through Microsoft. Finding the right place can be daunting. The following link will get you right where you need to be. It will list the requisite needs for replacement eligibility and provide contact information.

Click Here for the Microsoft page regarding replacement of software, keys, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A key paragraph from that page:
Replacements for damaged, defective, or lost Microsoft software or hardware loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); To request replacement hardware or software, contact the Microsoft Supplemental Parts team at the appropriate contact number that is provided in the “Contact Information” section. You must be in possession of the product (if it is damaged or defective) and be able to provide proof of purchase. The customer service representative will advise you of any replacement costs or shipping and handling fees that may be charged. If a product is no longer under warranty, the replacement item may no longer be available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have pointed many people with similar problems in this direction. I have been through it myself. The folks on the other end were pleasant and helpful.

You won't run into any snags.

Thanks for using FixYa

    Hello again Jane,

So I spoke too soon about hitting a snag. Another reason for clarification. There seems to be a shortage of this type of help from Microsoft outside North America.

Since you have a working copy on your computer, I'd like to suggest an alternative.

Have you considered an upgrade? (No, I'm not in sales) Wouldn't that provide for the goals you have described?

    • If you get an upgrade, you will have the ability to add new features at your convenience (they may even be standard by now).

    • You still have the use of existing data with the added file transferability new formats provide.

    • An Upgrade, though more expensive than a replacement , is considerably less than the full version.
Whether you need the whole Office Suite or just Word or Excel, for the current circumstances, this could be the way to go.

Click here for Upgrade Qualifications page.

    Mike

Short of going to the unibersity and buying a new one at low priced, I dont think you will get a cheap and legit copy from anyone.  if it is the cd itself not working because it is scratched, iwould suggest geting a car buffer or a buffing wheel for a drill and some rubbing compound and tryuing tio buff the shiny side of the cd.  99 percent of failure with cd's are scratch related.  here is an instructabele if your not sure how to do it.

hope this helps.

Well if you still have the code then any cd will work.  You could just find someone who has  a copy and use it but put in your code.  it is only ilegal to  do if you dont own the code you are using wich is not the case here.  When you buy the software it is the code you are paying for not the cd itself.  have you actually called M$ to see if you sent back the cd if you could get a replacement, or contacted the university with the same proposal.  Worst they could say is no.and if thats the case you could always just download a copy, then like i said before, use your legal code wich you own.

Well I would never condone this for the purpose of illegal downloads but in this situation I would suggest going to google and searching for "office xp torrent" then follow the links.  Of course you will have to learn how to use a torrent but wikipedia has a great tutorial on those as well.  Short of that I would never give out a site to download on here becusause some may use it for unlawful practices but google will get you going in the right direction.

Information on getting a replacement CD is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246

You may wish to talk to Microsoft before you pay ... probably about $10 ... to ensure your academic license key will work, if indeed that's what you have.

Jane, Mike258 and I are trying to send you to the same spot:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246

That's the place that will help get you a replacement CD, likely for a fee of $5 to $10 -- not too bad.

Is that CD an upgrade version? It will work only with a previously installed Office 2003, maybe. This one is cheaper. The full install version doesn't upgrade the previous one and does install on a PC which never had an Office.
So, try uninstalling the previous Office and then install. If it doesn't install, then buy a full version of 2007.
