Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Replacing a relay switch/kit on a maytag refrigerator MSD2432GR

Our fridge quit cooling, we came home to water all over the floor, it was the ice melting. We cleaned out the back got all the dust out of the coils etc... We were told that if we checked the relay switch and it rattled, it was probably what went bad, We removed the part and went to the part store and purchased a replacement. The replacement is in pieces (the original part came in a white box) We figured out how to put the two pieces into the fridge but are totally confused on the wiring. We have the instructions that came with the part, but they are confusing and we just can't figure it out. The man at the parts store said it is the right part, but the configuration is different.

The model number on the Maytag fridge is MSD2432GR Serial number starts with 129. The compressor is number EMBRACO The part we purchased is Overload relay kit.

Again we know how to put the two pieces into the compressor but the wiring isn't matching up or making sense. This is what is confusing us. The instructions say exactly this: ''White jumper wire on left terminal, (number 2 on relay) into 3/16 terminal on old harness''. What does that connect to? The guy at the parts store said the jumper wire may not be needed And the second thing that is confusing us is exactly this: ''Orange or white wire to right terminal (number 3 on relay) PTC Start device''

Can the orange wire and the jumper wire be hooked together or not?

Can you help explain this for us? Thanks for your help.

One more question we have - what does the phrase "old harness mean?"

  • Griff96 Dec 06, 2008

Thanks for your help. I scanned the instruction page and can take photos of the parts if you need them.

Wow! I am confused also. It sounds like it is more complicated than the ones I use. Can you send me an image of the relay and the terminals on the compressor?
I can tell you that the live wire ( wire with electricity) is the one that goes on the common terminal, that is the one that it at the top of the trangle formation, unless the formation is upside down then it goes on the bottom. Then the other neutral wire goes on the run terminal which is usually on the right if the triangle formation is right side up. Usually the neutral wire is white. So
try putting the white wire on terminal 3 and the orange on the top (or bottom) terminal. If there are any wires left over that you think need to be connected I would need to see an image.

I am sorry. I ment an image of the part itself and the compressor. The image you sent is too small and hard to read.

Ok Great pictures. The white part goes onto the top or bottom terminal depending on its orientation. Then the black on the other two. The tricky part is trying to find out which wire is "live" . It looks like the power cord is unplugged at the harnes. If that is the case the harness might line up with the cord and you can tell that way. In order to do this you need to follow the power cord to the wall. The prong that plugs into the right side of the outlet is the "live" side. Follow that side to the harness and see which color wire lines up with it the orange or the blue. This is the one that will go on the common/top/bottom terminal. The other one will go on the black part. Also, it looks like you won't need the jumper wire.

To be honest with you I am not sure. They may be talking about the wires going to the compressor.

Also if this doesn't work I really need to be able to see all of the terminals on the relay and the compressor.

The ice dispenser and water dispenser on the door will not work

"Prepare for the worst" This is a problem i'm currently dealing with at the moment, ice maker thaw'd and refroze the ice as a block, binding the crusher turbine till it quit working. then water dispenser started spitting till it quit working, but anyway i disconnected the ice maker and water dispenser power hookup, because when i tried to use it it was drawing off the power of the fridge. now i'm to the point where fridge clicks like the relay is going out. in the back of the freezer below the ice maker tray i removed the clip or screw to where when it clicks i can hand spin the cooling fan on the click, and fridge starts up and runs, but don't remove this panel because having it on helps the air push into fridge compartment and keeps cooling elements from turning to a block of ice, " so long story short " its either your cooling fan or relay on chip board that starts cooling fan, i'm no expert but this is where i'm at hope it helps.

My Maytag side/side freezer not cooling. Motor is running. Woke up this morning and water was on the floor. What can I do? Please, we're moving and this just happened. Its only 4 yrs old

your condenser fan is running, but the compressor if its quite warm to the touch isn't,its running on both start and run windings and will burn out the windings over time if left like this, you need to replace the ptc overload relay combo on the comperssor and the unit will again cool properly
