Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

2 Answers

I think the laser is going out?

The player will attempt to read the disc but will not play I have been told by Best Buy Stores that the laser could be going out or the lens has a problem. Who would I send this too and what would the costs be to correct this problem?
Sincerely,
Linda Wells

I agree with mumma on resetting the system before you spend money to get it fixed. backup the data you want to keep. then try this.

1) (make sure your controller is plugged in) and press and hold the power button, turning the system on. you will hear a beep as soon as you touch it, then another beep after 5 seconds. keep holding the button and you should hear two quick beeps (not three, if you hear three, try again). as soon as you hear the 2 beeps release.

2) you should now be at a screen that has 6 options. click on restore file. it will tell you your files are corrupted, but that shouldn't be all that surprising.

3) click some yes's and let it do its thing. this may work, it may not. but it's worth a try before you pay money. (you can do this before or after you reformat your system and start from scratch, up to you)

you can try the link above for support for your console. The only other thing that I can suggest is that you reset your system and see if this makes any difference. Sometimes certain games can make the system act weird. If you don't mind losing saved data then I suggest restoring it to the factory default settings first then if you still have the same problem after it could be the disk drive itself. If restoring your system does not help then contact sony on the above link for further support and advice.

Also you did not say whether this happens with all of your disks or just some. If it is only some of them, then the disks can be cleaned with a little white spirit followed by drying gently with a soft cotton cloth.

I hope my advise is of some use to you

The DVD unit keeps trying to load and then an error comes up that says "no disc" and there is a disc in the unit??

Hello,

Are you referring to a DVD player? If yes, read further. if no, please let me know.

how long have you been using this player? I suspect the laser (lens) of the player. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on DVD discs.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

My playstation 2 does not recognise that a disc had been inserted

What Cause's Disc Read Error's

There are many different factors on what could cause a DRE.

1. Games, Cd's, DVD's, Cd-Rom's all could be scrached up to much, for the PlayStation to be read them

2. Your PlayStation could be to Dirty! Meaning, dust, hair, dirt, water, soda, anything that may have gotten into your PlayStation system, causing your laser/lens no being able to read the Disc correctly.

3. Your PlayStation laser-lens could be out of line. This happens if your PlayStation has been droped, kicked, wacked around. Really, and physical abuse. For those of you that don't know what this means, here is a quick over view. Your playStation laser is on a track. When your system is on, the laser slides back and forth to read what ever disc you may have in the system at that time. So physical abuse could cause the laser to get off track.

4. Your system's laser, or DvD player might just be broke. This could happen if it has taken in to much physical abuse, or just a random occurrence.

What Can I do, to fix my Disc Read Error

If you think, that one of these problems might be giving your DRE's, then this next section is here to help you.

1. This problem is simply fixable. All you need to do, is either run your disc through a disc cleaner, or get your disc refurbished. You can easily get your disc refurbished at either Gamestop, Eb Games, Best Buy if I remember does them. Or any computer store. Or, you can simply just buy a new Game, Cd, or DVD

2. There are few different ways, to help fix your PlayStation system, that is giving you Disc Read Errors from your system being dirty.

A. You can simply run a Laser-Lens Cleaner through your PlayStation System. This will remove any dust, hair, or dirt, that may be blocking the laser-lens to be able to read your disc correctly.

B. You can use a Air Duster to blow out where you disc goes into your system. This could blow away any dust, dirt, or hair that may be trapt in the DVD player of your system.

C. If you want to open up the PlayStation system yourself, to really give the laser-lens, and DVD player a good cleaning, you can FOLLOW this Guide I found. (This is one guide I have shown many users, and all have used and loved the guide) Remember, if you open your PlayStation system, this will void any warranty that your system may still have. It may even prevent sony from fixing your PlayStation system, if you should choose to have them fix it. (Please read on how to have sony fix your Playstation in 2. D. in this section of the guide.) Altho, I have sent sony a PlayStation of mine that I have opened up myself, and broke the warranty sticker that is on the system.

D. You can simply call SONY. (PlayStation Support: 1-800-345-SONY) You just simply call that number, and just listen and tell the operator that you are talking to, what is going on with your system. They will then over the phone, try and help you figure out what the error is, and even try to help you fix the problem right then and there over the phone. Or they will ask you to send in your PlayStation system so they can further look at what may be causing yoru problems. Once they figure out what is causing you problems, they will go ahead, and fix the problems. If your system is still under the Sony One Year Warranty, you will have NOT be charged for the repairs. However, if your system is past the Warrany, they still will fix your system. Sometimes they WILL charge you, other times they might fix your PlayStation system for nothing!

3. You can try and fix your laser by visiting this GUIDE. Remember, if you open your PlayStation system, this will void any warranty that your system may still have.

4.If your PlayStation's DVD player, or lens is broken. Then you can either send your system into SONY to get it fixed. Or buy a new DVD player, or lens and repair it yourslef. (This part of the guide will updated with links soon)

Thanks,
We hope to see your problem resolved.
Good Luck and Good Day.

Sometimes won't read disc. other times works fine

Sounds like your laser lense, sensor that detects the ones and zeros from the laser, is dirty. Try using a cleaning CD, you can get them at any electronics store/department. Ex: Walmart, RadioShack, Best Buy.

PSP unable to read UMD discs

You will probably need a laser replacement. Check your local game stores to see if they do console repairs. If not you will have to find a laser online and attempt to replace it yourself. It's fairly simple.

Playstation 3 laser problems

Is your disk scratched? If the laser was damaged or dirty it probably wouldn't read the disk at all. If your disk is too scratched to play you can buy a tool that will buff out the scratches at a place like Best Buy.

It dont work

HI LIL Mama,

Is Avril Lavigne around.  I have Avril Lavignes "Girlfriend" song Remixed with Lil Mama.
To your PS2,  You have a Laser problem. Think about what the PS2 does when a Disc is not in the player. This is whats up,  it thinks that no Disc is in the player. If the laser reads anything, It will attempt to focus in and read the disc.  Your either need to clean the lens real good, plug it back in, Tune the laser, or REplace the laser.
Contact me a repairtech@playstationclinic.com if you need someone to repair your problem.
