E-machine Model D2246 does not power up

Both my son and I have E-Machine Model D2246 desktop computers. Both machines seem to have experienced a failure of their power supplies since neither machine will power up. Is this a common problem? My son's computer is completely dead and my machine will indicate power if the button is pushed in but does not start. I've ordered another power supply to test in these machines but I am worried that the mother boards may have been damaged and may not allow the machines to power up. Is there a problem with the motherboards on these machines? What is the protocol for testing?

E-machines are notorious for having weak power supplies. Although not impossible, it is unlikely the motherboards are damaged.

You may also look online for rebuilt power supplies that are beefed up from the originals.

Be sure you have a good surge suppressor and surge suppression on your phoneline if you use dialup. I also recommend surge suppression on your ethernet connection as well.

Power supply is normally first thing to go. Second most common is the motherboard. Sometimes one takes out the other. You can either replace power supply which is cheaper to do or if you want to test power supply that is an option. You can test the power supply with a paper clip. Although this tells you if the power supply is working or not, it still doesn't tell you if motherboard is good. If you plug in new power supply and still doesn't work, then most likely board is bad. You can see how to do paper clip test here:

Where do you plug in the adaptor on the e machine for wifi

Depends on what kind of Wireless Adapter you are using

There's the Wireless Adapter Card

Comes in three styles of connection,

1) PCI Wireless Adapter Card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4389486&CatId=2701

2) And PCI-Express x1 Wireless Adapter Card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1068811&CatId=2688

PCI-Express x4 style may be out there too.
(I've never bothered to look. I use the USB style)

A Wireless Adapter Card based on the PCI technology, goes in a PCI slot. Generally White in color, but NOT always,

A Wireless Adapter Card based on the PCI Express technology, is used in a PCI-Express x1 slot,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PCIExpress.jpg

Top example is a PCI-Express x4 slot.
Moving down, next is a PCI-E x16 slot
Next, PCI-E x1 slot
Next is a PCI-E x16 slot,
and the last one at the bottom is a PCI slot.

Notice they are all Yellow.
Color of connector does NOT matter.

What the expansion slot is, does........

Also there is a USB Wireless Adapter,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3970955&CatId=2704

This type of Wireless Adapter, plugs into any available USB port on the computer.

Front or back of an eMachines desktop computer, in any available USB port.

Any available open USB port, on an eMachines laptop.

(Or any computer manufacturer)

What is the model number of the eMachines Desktop PC?
Examples, T1090, T2460, W4685, D2246, etc.

I should be able to tell you what motherboard is used inside, and may have access to a link, to the Motherboard Manual.

Post back in a Comment.

Very sorry about your son.

If you can't find the real problem, you can always put that hard drive into another PC to get the files. If so, be sure to looking to a potential "jumper" setting on that drive for it to be recognized.

Random rebooting when connected to our wireless account

Possibly what you thought was a virus was actually early signs of this very instability. Back up everything you care about on that machine at once! Then run diagnostics (google some good download sites and do the downloads to a floppy or CD on the other machine). You are probably looking at buying a replacement (few eMachines are worth repairing)

This sounds like a power supply went bad. Did you either have a power surge or did someone shut down the computer by pulling out the plug?

Won't power on

Hi gdpreston1,
According to Toshiba all you need is a bios upgrade.
In very rare cases, the battery pack of your PC may stop accepting a charge, i.e., the battery stops working & no longer supplies power to the computer. To minimize the risk of ever experiencing this problem. Toshiba strongly recommends that you download and install the latest BIOS by clicking this link below.
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1795538&moid=1310944&rpn=PSAA8U&BV_SessionID=@@@@0783506992.1202186758@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadedefffiikcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&ct=DL&all_docs=true
ACPI Flash BIOS version 5.90 for Tecra A7/Satellite A105 (Intel) (PTA70U).
File: ta7i0v59.exe
From what you posted you "are" experiencing the above.
Much better than buying a part!
If you need anything else just post back & we'll go from there.
