If the thing isn't stopping as it's supposed to after you open it up, you may have a faulty sensor. This is a $150 new printer. If opening it -fully-, pushing back gently but firmly, still doesn't trigger the thing into thinking it's ready for a new ink tank, try yanking the power cable. You can generally also push the carriage, the carrier with the ink tanks, by hand without causing damage. Don't use too much force -- but it should move over about as difficult as a big dictionary across a table.

The ink tank doesn't go to the middle

After you opened the front panel, did you lift the scanner section? The scanner section has a switch on it that activates the ink tank holders to come out to the middle so they can be changed. It is not the greatest design and it doesn't stay up by itself. I normally use an old cartridge to prop up the scanner section while I change cartridges. Hope this helps!

Black ink cartridge

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

with the star (in a
head ?) above it, followed by
scan, copy, scan
2) Select TEST MODE (press right

arrow button 13 times).
3) Select [8] PRINTER TEST
4) It'll now say "- 8-2 +" press

the right arrow key once
to get "- 8-3 +" Hit ok.
5) Select 0. [INK COUNT].
6) Press the ok key.
7) It should return to showing

the "8:
Printer Test - 8-3 +"
8) Press the [Stop/Reset]key -

black key with triangle and
circle on it –
(returning to the state of 3)),
and then press the [ON/OFF]
key.

Good Luck and don't blame me if it
goes wrong !!!!

Now you can print again, but it has not solved your full ink-tank, that has to be solved in future.

Re:Canon Multipass C3500ex

Don, have you unplugged the printer for a few minutes? first the power plug, see if that clears it. If not, unplug it from the computer, reboot the computer, then plug printer back in. If not that, when an ink cartridge is refilled (depending on the model) the printer needs to be tricked into thinking a "new" cartidge is being installed. They make their money from the ink, not as much the printer. You may need to check the owners manual to see if the is the case. I have had to use tape to block off certain contacts, then remove the cartidge and block off another section of contacts, then remove tape all together and re-insert the cartridge.
