Pulled plug out and the end of plug looks burnt, wire looks fine. Looks like something plastic was melted near the problem.

SOURCE: Engine seems to flood out when increasing speed and dies

If it starts lightly smoking black smoke at high RPM it is flooding or getting too much fuel. The float is leaking you may have not set the float height correctly when you put that carb back together. Or the needle and set could be bad.

SOURCE: Craftsman lawn mower. Briggs & Stratton 6.75

1) check plug for being carbon fouled or fuel fouled. Even though it fires, it may not be firing correctly
2) make sure you have compression 75-100 psi. since the compression release so you can pull the rope works off of the exhaust valve, you may not get anymore than that.
3) Is there water or debris in the float bowl

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your local lawn & garden dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

I stored my lawnmower on an angle all winter. Yesterday when I tried to start it oil came out of the exhaust. Today it started with alot of blue smoke, of course. what's my next step?

Just make sure the oil level in the crank case is OK, then just run it. The smoke will burn off once the muffler heats up, but it may take a while. The smoke is annoying, and not all so environmentally friendly, but it won't do the mower any harm. Just because the oil leaked into where it wasn't supposed to be, it doesn't mean that you have increased the ability for oil to leak that way. Good luck, Al K

Oil appearing at exhaust, smokey, briggs and stratton lawm mower.

You will need to replace or clean the air filter, and probably the spark plug. Do not operate the mower for some hours to allow the oil drain (inside the engine). Check oil level and fill it if necessary. Some oil remaining in the exhaust should be burnt next time the lawnmower operates. You will see smoke at the beginning, that will be normal (burnt oil). Hope this helps!
