Trouble code P0440 comes up when checking for trouble codes. What causes it to show up
This code is for an evap system large leak. Could be cause by rotted evap hoses, stuk open vent solenoid and gas cap among other things. Make sure your gas cap o-ring isn't dry rotted and cracked. Also make sure is tight. You could test the purge solenoid and the vent valve electrically by grounding them several times and making sure they dont stop working or stay stuck. You can also use a vacuum pump at the same time to make sure they aren't obstructed when open. Also make sure the filler neck isn't rotted and has holes in it. If you are unable to find a problem you may need to have the system smoke tested. Good luck.
Code is for the evap system which vents gas fumes from the tank.
Could be anything from a bad gas cap to a leak in the vent system.

This is a common issue particularly with vehicles that have had some neglect to the oil change routine. The VVT solenoid on the top of the valve cover gets clogged with thickened or sludged oil.
Replace the VVT solenoid and gasket with a new unit and clear the codes.

Trouble code p0440 may be a simple as an improperly replaced gas cap, or a crack in one of the evap hoses.
Have the code cleared, if it comes back, find a shop that will do a "smoke test" to find the bad evap hose, and have it replaced.

P0440 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System .The most common cause for this code is a loose or bad gas cap.The running issue is unlikely caused by this.Is that the only code present?
