Hi Shycshaw, If it was working and then stopped without any major changes the chances are pretty good that the drive is beyond economic repair, especially in light of the symptoms you are describing. Having said that have you tried: - cleaning your read/write heads using a commercial cleaner yet? I?d be skeptical that a dirty read/write head could cause what you?ve been observing but it?s worth a try. -- open the case and reseat the drive power and data cables. Also check and reseat the cables on the other drive (if any) connected to the same IDE channel (cable) as well as where the cable connects to your motherboard. Loose or improperly connected connects could cause intermittent faults like you are observing as well. Generally optical drives do wear out, some more quickly than others. For users with high usage of CD/DVD drive I usually install both an R/W drive and a DVD/CD ROM drive in the same PC. I instruct the users to only use the ROM drive for playing which saves wear and tear on the more expensive R/W drive. If you use your optical drive a lot this might be a good tactic for you as well. Good luck and please don?t forget to rate this posting. CD/DVD drive problem

See if the Drive Reads in My Computer. See if you can see the contents of the CD. Try to run or play the data.

If not... you may need to uninstall the CD driver and let it reload again. The way to do that is to Rt Click My Computer | Letf Click Properties | go to Device Manager | go to and open DVD - CD Rom Drive Folder | Rt Click the Device and unistall. Total Shut Down Reboot after taken out the Drive in the system. Start up and let it completely finish. Shut down again... restart with drive back in. Hopfully it will redetect and work.

If not again... Bad Drive ?

LITEON DVD/CD-RW CAN READ DVD BUT NOT AUDIO/DATA CD.

I would suggest cleaning the drive with a cleaning dvd, $19.99 at most retailers. Or you can open up your computer and verify all connections to the drive are good, disconnect and re-connect to be sure. Hope this helps.

Combo drive CD not reading, but DVD ok

it may have dual laser and one that reads cd's is faulty, but try uninstalling the dvd drive first then re installing it to see if it cures it, if not the drive will need replacing. Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers

My dvd combo does not read dvd

There are separate lasers for CD reading, and for DVD reading. This is why it is possible to have a drive that reads only CDs but not DVDs, or the other way around. And your particular combo unit seems to have a lot of these problems. Since the drive doesn't work it's almost definitely a problem with the drive itself (I'm assuming that there is nothing wrong with the discs you tried to read). If that drive is still covered by a warranty period, send it back for repairs. Otherwise, I can't see the harm in trying to tinker with it yourself as the DVD portion of it is dead anyways. Ummm, on a side note...CompUSA is going out of business and they are selling things cheap. I got a DVD lightscribe burner for $40...booyah!
