Question about Printers & Copiers

9 Answers

I have been using an all-in-one HP Color LaserJet 2840 on a Windows Vista computer for several months. Of late, I can no longer use the scan feature at all, HP Director has 'disappeared' and the evidently 'new' HP Solution Centre refuses to run at all. If I try to initial a scan, I either get no response, or I get a message indicating that there is no device... when I try to resolve the issue by checking out on-line forums, it appears the issue is well known at both HP and Microsoft, but no fix has been offered. I emailed a request for assistance to HP but have not had a response yet, other than an automatic email verifying that my concern has been received. Does anyone know of a solution to this issue? I have lost a major functionality in my home office with no scanner available and evidently no resolution. The all-in-one was bought in May and the computer in June, so it is quite a concern to me that I am having such a problem now.

Here is what I had tried to resolve this issue: I uninstalled all the HP software and reinstalled from the internet the full solutions package for my all-in-one, and that did not resolve the issue. Subsequently, I again uninstalled all the software and drivers and reinstalled from the original CD and that did not resolve the matter either. When I have tried HP's on-line driver checker it says I am using the wrong driver, but I have tried the route of installing one of the alternate drivers and that too failed to resolve the matter. I am still awaiting some response from HP to see if they have a solution. In the meantime, no scanner, and HP Solution Centre just keeps saying "No HP devices have been detected" in spite of the fact that I am printing with the device even as I write this. Why can I print to the device but not scan? IRIS has been my OCR software program, and it says also that it cannot find a device. This has me perplexed.

ALright, i read about how you have tried re-installing and getting updated drivers and no go.

Usually when this happens, it takes a while and then eventually Microsoft will develope an update, but i wouldnt hold your breath.

You can try the Automatic updates and see if Microsoft has an update. Also, try switching the USB port you have it plugged into. I have seen Vista creat a different port for the scanner and on for the printer ( a virtual port) wicth both connect at the same USB.

You can try this.

Go to START>PRINTERS AND FAXES>PROPERTIES

When it opens, go to the PORTS tab.

The printer should be on LPT1

Itry moving it to LPT2, apply and close and restart your P.C. and see if it redetects the printer and works.

I had a Lexmark that was an all in one and it made ports for the FAX the PRINTER and the SCANNER and they where all using the same port but the printer took priority, booting out the scanner and Fax.

I had to designate each to its own port to get it to work.

Give it a try and get back to me if you have any questions.

Have you tried unistalling and reinstalling the software that came with it. There are probably something messed up there. Is the printer as new as the Machine?

It also happens if some of your windows files are corrupt or go missing  so the pc doesnot supports some of the features while the remaining features work.as u said you have uninstalled and reinstalled the software again n again i dont think its a problem with the software after trying out so many installations.i would firmly suggest to reinstall the new operating system and then install the hp printer/scanner drivers it will work properly.

I had the same issue.
I got mine to work by downloading the "HP universal print driver" 64 bit I think. Try that.

This is probably only a software problem, reinstall all printer software from disk.

If HP Director has 'gone' and the evidently 'new' HP Solution Centre does not run, then this is probably a software issue.

Unplug printer USB before reinstalling the software, then perfor a full software setup using the printer disk.

Start software installation with USB cable unplugged, the software setup program will ask you to connect the printer USB.

    That should fix the problem.

As I told you, reinstall the software first, that should resolve the issue.

Click here to see in detail how to remove the corrupted software and reinstall the software.

    Additionally,

Here is support page for your model.

If you need to contact HP in the future, use the Diagnose problem or Chat (HP Instant Support), if you send them an email you may get no answer back.

That is because you installed the drivers in the wrong way and Windows installed the default driver (that is not good).

I am telling you that this is probably a software issue.

Remove the old software and install it again, starting setup with printer not connected.

Follow instructions here to remove the corrupted software and reinstall the software.

Alternatively get instructions from (HP Instant Support),

The problem is not weird or uncommon, it is the most frequent problem on printers, the driver is wrong, any software need to get access through the driver to use the printer, that is the reason why no software is working.

Additionally, to install a driver on Vista you may need to bypass what is called UCI (User Control Interface) to do this, instead of running the driver installer file by double clicking on it, you click right button of mouse on top of the file, and chose "Run as Administrator" from dropdown menu.

    see: Run As Administrator
